What is the max number of units ?
I’ve heard a few militaristic players complain about the number of units limit. Can someone tell me PRECISELY (is it for one civ or for all civ like the cities ?) what that limit is and I might try to get rid of it during the Christmas holidays. No guarantee I will succeed !

I think that the max number of units may depend on how powerful your computer is. A lot of people complained about maxing out units on Red Front, while many others (including myself) had no problems.

Why don't you experiment with the cheat menu?

When you've got cheat activated and Scenedit, etc, the units have a little number by their names in the right hand larger taskbar thingy. Is that a serial number assigned to the units when they're built? Does that indicate the order of the unit in building?
EG When you start off, if all 3 civs have only one settler each, then do they number Settler (1), Settler (2), and Settler (3)?

Thanks Shadowstrike, Alinestra and Leo . I know now that the max number is 1948 units !
And I’ve got a real pain in my left arm because I had to press 1948 times simultaneously the shift and f1 key.
Hopefully now, I can get rid of that limit …
I’m gonna give it a shot tomorrow.

Well, if you're serious about the shot, I would recommend codeine as a durable painkiller

Even on shields, in cheat-mode, orders can be "guessed" to speculate on tasks given by the AI's to their units.
Limit of 1948? This is a strange figure indeed.
Considering memory -stacks- must somehow reserve space for a maximum number of >ACTIVE< units.
And i tought bytes were the reference; 256...1024!
The fact is that when the last available slot is filled by a player in any given turn... the sequence falls back to the defending roster once it looses a unit.
Meaning > dismantling at a particular moment a few (1945,46,47,48...) units might prevent opponents to use those slots!! Strange, indeed.

Well, it was more complicated than I first thought …
At 2048 units it stopped again. I guess, it’s no more than 1948 for one civ and no more than 2048 for all civs. Does that seem believable ?

Thanks again Alinestra. But I was of course joking, because if pressing 2000 times a key would do me harm, then I’ll be long dead because of my Civ2 addiction.
On the other hand, if you know of a good remedy against disappointment, I would be interested because it simply doesn’t work well. I got rid of both 1 civ and overall limits but the 2051th unit sent the game crashing. I guess I won’t make a patch for 2 more units …
And it was more or less the same with the 255 cities limit.
For a few hours, I was a genius, but the princess turned back into a frog.
