.bmp to gif 87a
Does anyone know of a utility to do a .bmp to gif 87a conversion that doesn't take up 80 megs on my hard drive.
Call me anal, but I don't think I need a program of that size (Paint shop pro) do this one little task.

Boy your hard drive must be pathetic if you think 80 megs is a lot...
But no, I have no idea because I use PSP...

It's not that, I just like to be tidy. Even a 45 gig hard drive fills up fast if you collect a lot of trash on it.

Many freeware picture viewers can load&save different formats. Remember also that 24bit BMPs are better saved as JPEGs to save space...

I'm talking about civ 2 files here. I deal with either 8 bit .bmp files or gif 87a. Every freeware file viewer I have seen saves gif as 89a.

I used to have photopaint; maybe I should dig that up again, it was pretty decent. I got rid of it because now I use the gimp.
I also primarily use irfan view for file conversion, and it saves as 89a, and that seems to be the problem right there.
But, since you did the conversion for me, and I average 2x a year wanting to convert to gif 87a, I won't have to worry about it again for a while
Now I can finally finish my scenario!!! WAHOO!! By the way you might want to check it out, bebro, you're in the credits, you know
I can't wait to see how the new graphics look! thanks so much!

OOps! Somehow the background isnt index #255 anymore! It is in the .bmp file I sent you; I just double-checked. So in the conversion to .gif it must have replaced color #255 with one of the other grays!
Hmmmmmm

Woah! I just figured out how to make Irfan view do the right thing. I have to unselect an option that tells it to save the transparent color.
Hooray! Now I can do my own conversions But I wouldn't have thought to try it if it weren't for you bebro, so you still get the credit

Hmm, I only opened and saved it, have you fixed it?

I THOUGHT it was going to work! But then the .dll made civ2 crash.. Aargh.. I changed the background color to something unique (still index #255 though) and sent it to you again. (I'm going to get this right someday!)

Yep, it was definitely Irfanviews fault. I guess taking out the transparent color only made it the right size for the .dll , but it still crashed the program.. grrrrr...

Are you sure that GIF89s donīt work with civ2? Perhaps there was another problem (as activated transparency)?
I use Corel PhotoPaint or Adobe Photoshop, donīt know exactly what GIF format they use (it isnīt clearly displayed, only "GIF, LZW compression") but the resulting files work fine in civ2
