Strange combat trends

Have any of you noticed that occasionally a unit engaged in a battle will sometimes appear to have no chance? At first I thought is was bad luck, but now I'm seeing it with armies. Sometimes when a unit attacks, one side or the other loses every round and is defeated without causing a single point of damage. It really seems to happen more than it should. Twice now I've attacked fortified infantry with an army of tanks to have the entire army defeated without causing a single point of damage to the infantry. I've also seen numerous example's of ironclads sinking elite battleships without recieving a scratch. There seems to be an initial dice role that heavily influences the outcome of subsequent rounds.
