Solar / Coal Plant
I am correct in assuming that I would never want to build a Coal Plant, if a Solar Plant has already been built in that city. From reading the Civolopedia, a Coal Plant replaces any existing Power Plant and causes Pollution. If I built Coal it would replace Solar if available, right?

Thanks for the help.

I believe all plants replace other plants already built in that city.

ditto, that is the only thing that makes sense

when I built a nuke plant in a city already covered with Hoover dam, my production sky rocketed. great for producing pollution as well . combine that with the iron works and you city can build every unit in 1 turn.

I just built a coal plant where I had solar. The production didn't change, and I had the option to build a solar plnat again. Guess what I did next.

huh... come again?

Aren't nuke plants and hydro plants mainly no-pollution plants?

btw: kinda nasty to have nuclear plants in coastal cities when the AI navy is playing with their cannons

yeah your right. it was the iron works doing most of the pollution I think. but I'm not sure if that contributes as well. my city had well over 100 production even without a manufacturing plant or a offshore platform.

I rarely build coal plants, they just produce too much polution.

Generally, in the Civ I and II, I skipped building coal plants. I don't know what it is, maybe my research and development strategy needs tweaking, but in Civ III it seems like there's more time between new advances for me. As such, it's it's actually worth building the coal plants before getting hydro plants or the Hoover Dam.

Of course, you have to clean up the pollution, but I seem to have extra workers for that when playing American. As they work faster, they're more likely to be idle. Plus I had a surplus of them because I was building a worker every time my cities hit that 12 population ceiling before Hospitals can be built.

What was really cool was that after the Hospitals were built, I added my extra workers back into the cities, and had them grow up to like 18. I guess Civ III lets you do that. It was like We Love the President's Day in Civ I and II!

Back to power plants, I guess it would be a good idea before building a new more advanced plant to sell the old one. Does building the new plant automatically do that for you?

Yes, building a new power plant auto sells the old one. You can check this by building a Coal Plant in a city with a Solar Plant. As soon as the Coal Plant is completed, you'll note 40 shields appear in the box (from selling the Solar Plant, which gets you 40 gold 40 shields).

just build solar, nuclear ones can melt down and that's not a good thing. get hoover dam, though as this also decreases the pollution. nuclear plants and solar plants each cose the same to maintain, so solar is better because it's safer.
