Reprise: Is Civilization II still a good game?
This is a reprise to the previous poll since the first one was a bit too much of a landslide. The results should be more evened out on this one.

The best baby...
Civ2 is widely considered one of the greatest games ever released. It's hard to keep Civ/Civ2 separate, I think Civ2 gets bonus points because people liked Civ as well...
Civ3 reveals some things that Civ2 didn't do, or do well. But it also reveals in it's first incarnation that Civ2 did some things pretty damn good and that sometimes change for changes sake isn't always a good thing...

Civ2 is crap. It's nothing more than a glorified chessboard!
Oh, and the Artificial Idiots you play against... and MP? Takes three years to finish a turn against my girlfriend, and then she complains that I am slow! I thought girls liked slow.
Anyway, not for me.

Most strategy games are glorified board games. In fact, I can't think of any in the civilization building genre that arent.
I've logged a lot of hours playing video games in my life, but civ2 takes the cake in the #1 spot in hours played. 5 Stars. Despite some annoying details, I find very little to be wrong with the game.
Havent played civ3 yet, but alot of the stuff (cartoon diplo screens, animated graphics, other assorted happy horsesh1t) looks a little too hokey for my tastes......but I'm certainly gonna give it a run!

Of course civ2 is 5 stars. Who dare say anything else?
It will be around as long as there are PC's on earth.

Maybe she's out on a date while you think she's micromanaging...
Even CivII gets boring, but the never ending parade of scenarios keeps it eternally fresh. Easily the best computer game ever, in my opinion.

CivII Uber Alles
Drake, I feel the same way regarding the cutsie/ hoakie stuff they have added for show. And I have the LE, bought it the first day it came out. I have officially put it down. Played 4 games and can't stand it. It has given me a new appriciation of the streamlined aspects of CivII. I can't tell you how nice it feels to get back on CivII, where everthing works and things are familliar and comfortable.
The cons of CivII do not outweigh the pros of CivIII.

5 Stars! I hope to give Civ 3 more when I've played it!
Early accounts of the game seem promising. However, I do share some of the reservations about the silly stuff. The screen shots of the maps look a bit too sci-fi for my tastes.

I played Civ2 last night for the first time since I got Civ3... Yup, it still completely kicks booty, though the early game is surprisingly... dry. The game is just as much of a classic as ANY computer game ever released... It's THAT good.

Civ III is the sultan, but Civ II is the grand vizier and Civ the crown prince.
Long live Civ II!

Well, the release of Civ3 poses an important dilemma. Civ 3 manages to fix many complaints and is a great step forward - the problem is, they only added maybe half of what they could have done.
civ3 offers:
much improved diplomacy
excellent ressource system
incredibly better war model (war is now to be entered very thinkfully)
Small Wonders are a great idea.
what is incredibly annoying about civ3:
units have no firepower anymore - it is so frustating to have tanks defeated by musketmen. (and pikemen too, sometimes)
corruption is so annoying you'll want to kill yourself
Concepts of resistance only half-implemented - they could have done so much about it - with colony cities fighting for independance, civil wars, and the likes.
Given that, civ3 is better than civ2, but far from being the instant classic civ2 was at its release.

5 years and going on Civ2. That should speak for itself. Even with Civ3, they both can coincide nicely.

any game that gives 5+ years of entertainment has got to get 5 stars! the major thing i did n't like was pushing caravans about a large map, which has been sorted in Civ3
ignore the graphics scouse, you soon get used to them, the trade and culture systems REALLY makes you think about expanding too quickly in case your internal lines are broken by an enemy, and the AI seems much improved too (thou i've only had it a week or so)

5 stars
I'm not even close to being done with playing Civ2 (I still have to: beat Deity, learn to play scenarios, multi-play, play ToT, make scenarios, make maps, finally finish my Civ2 maps site )
I do't think I'll buy Civ3 anytime soon. Not that it is that bad or anything. Just that I can very much live without it, because I have plenty other things to do.
As a side note, I don't think the results in this poll are very surprising. With Civ3 out, it's mostly the die-hard Civ2 fans (and the odd spammer ) that visit the Civ2 forums.
