Can you play OCC with Civ1?
I have copied the file One City Challenge Strategy Guide by Paul van der Belt and printed it out.

Could I use this with Civ1 as well as with Civ2?

I have Civ1,Civ2, and Civ3. But I just recently got Civ1 believe it or not. And I love its simplicity and its straightforwardness.

And so I am going to play Civ1 for a few weeks and wondered if the OCC would work in it?

I discovered OCC on civ1 while my computer was down for a while.

Paul's strategy won't work very well with civ1, but you can try and find your own.

the huts seem to be spread out a lot more, and there are a lot fewer resources, especially trade resources. I think just gems(jungle) and gold(mountains). good luck finding one in a city limits, much less 4!

If you're on a coast, remember to load a settler on later on and railroad the sea squares. sounds irrational, I know. just unload and instead of moving, build (rail)road.

His notes on caravans still hold, though.

I have won the OCC on chieftan and warlord before I got back to civ2.

It's a bit different in civ1, as all of the standard civ2 OCC wonders expire at some point in the game. So you'll find it more difficult to get a research lead. And you'll need to build happy improvements too... I tried it on emp level a couple times, and it is difficult.

I think for now playing OCC on Civ1 sounds too hard to bring off!

So I will be content to learn Civ1 in the plain old way of studying the manual and playing.

Thanks all for your replies.

I've done it a few times. King level, emperor seems too hard.

The AI civs give no warning before they build a wonder so you can't rush buy wonders just before the AI builds them.

well, what you can do about that is save often. If suddenly I get a message that "Rome Builds Collossus", I'lll reload and it usually won't happen. I think the AI wonders just happen randomly.

I don't think that's that much of a cheat. maybe we should make some rules about when and whether we could use it. right now, we're just playing it for fun. the drawback of this cheat is that it basically eliminates the possibility that the computer will get the wonders you need.

I am not sure of merely one city- but I know that for a fact you can win the game by conquest if you only build about 3 cities and manage to conquer some more... so I would assume that you should be able to win by OCC.
