Colonies?
Run into a problem, where I build colonies and often setup defense on it, but then AI comes along and build cites next to my resources and takes them away. Shouldn't that be an act of war? Is something messed up or other people having this problem?

Colonies aren't inside your border so they are in neutral territory. This means that the computer can do whatever it wants.

Ok I understand that but... if another country comes along and builds a city right next to someones colony, putting that colony inside its newly formed terrority isn't that an act of war? Currently it removes the colony and gives them a road to the new resources that I once controlled, EVEN with my troops protecting the colony.

Colonies don't work is the problem because you can set them up in your borders over a resource and then an enemy can set up a city right next to you and annex it. IMHO it's completely broken OR they only intended it to be a very temporary stopgag measure until you or a rival city set up a permanent city there.

good idea, poor implementation. I've never built one. Might as while build a city there.

in my first few game si used colonies byut got peeved everytime one was taken over by a foreign civs city expansion..
so now i dotn build them unless i cant get a settler to the resource quickly... i now use settlers to build citys and keep my workers busy with roads and irrigation

I think its sad, colonies was such a cool idea. The simple fact that the AI can come in a build a city to take them out makes this feature pointless. I really hope a Civ3 maker reads this and makes the AI declare war inorder to build cites next to human or other AI's colonies. Whats the point in adding it if its not useable?

Also colonies favor civs that explore and send out works, lets make this at least useable.

Colonies need culture. As it stands they are broken. It was a good idea, but it lacks in execution. I hope they will address this in a patch.
