The Most Important Question of All
What are you guys replacing your music with? Down with Kenny G. I say!
Here is a list of some of the songs I've added...
Ancient:
Dead Can Dance - Tell Me About the Forest
Enya - Smaointe
Enya - Ask the Mountains
Enya - The Memory of Trees
Enigma - Persian Love Song
Middle Ages:
Enya - Symphonic
Enya - Athair Ar Neamh
Enigma - Knocking on Forbidden Doors
Last of the Mohiccans Theme
Dances With Wolves Theme
Industrial/Modern:
Nintendo - Metroid Techno Remix
DJ Liquid - I Close My Eyes
Jamoroquai - Wolf in Sheep's Clothing
Beethoven - Fur Elise (techno remix)
Shawshank Redemption Theme
(For the record, I kept the techno piece and the classical piece)

Within the first five minutes, I turned off the music in every game I own, or ever owned, and play without music.
The only exception to this is Quake II, where the music actually seemed to belong in the game somehow.
The music in CivIII should be dealt with by the Geneva Convention. I could castrate a cat by making him listen to the music for a couple of hours.

Forgive a pc illiterate for asking, but how do I replace the civ3 music files with mp3s? I can't simply turn the music off and then start up winamp because it focuses on one application at a time, nor can I find the civ3 music directory

default directory is:
c:\program files\infrogames interactive\civilization III\sounds\build
Just replace the .mp3s in the three directories with your own
Or get a better sound card that can handle both apps at once

*still laughing at Ludwig's comments*
I haven't modified my game yet...still absorbing that exquisite Firaxis immersive gaming experience . When I do fix the music, I'm thinking about :
Ancient:
The Map Room: Dawn - Raiders of the Lost Ark
Dennis Steals the Embryo - Jurassic Park (it sounds sorta ancient...*shrug*)
Middle Ages:
1492: Conquest of Paradise (theme)
Dance of the Knights - Prokofiev (from Romeo & Juliet ballet)
The Princess Bride (theme)
Industrial/Modern:
Imperial March - The Empire Strikes Back
A Fifth of Beethoven - Saturday Night Fever soundtrack
Jupiter - Holst
Mos Eisley Cantina band song (title?) - Star Wars: ANH
Ride of the Valkyries - Wagner
Honorable mention:
Mission Impossible Theme (at least until I win more often)
1812 Overture - Tchaikovsky
anything else by John Williams
Not if My Life Depended on it:
Margarittaville - Jimmy Buffet

March of the Valkyries by Wagner, just when I am about to engage in battle.
Looked and sounded good in Apocalypse Now.

I always turn the music off, the only thing I cant figure is on my computer the sounds from Civ 3 are very low, I need to set the speekers to very high to hear things going on, like cobat? Strange

Check out audio preferences, Shift S. In this you can turn off the music whilst still having sound effects.

CB2034, I considered putting the "song" of which you speak on my 'Not If My Life Depended On It' list, but chose not to. It's even worse than that.
I do have Ernie's "Rubber Duckie" song on mp3, which is kinda in the same catagory only infinitely better. But becuase you invoked the name of the purple evil one, you can't have it.

Download?
If Drefsab & Dienstag wouldn't mind putting their music folders in the Civ3-Files Forum for others to download some of us would benefit from your 'already put together' better music.

Re: Download?
I am opposed to using movie music, just because it usually pales in comparison to "real" classical music, but here are my suggestions anyways...
Ancient:
Gladiator - The Wheat
The Mission - Gabriel's Oboe
Medieval:
Last of the Mohicans- The Hunt
Last Emporer - Theme
English Patient - The English Patient
Glory - Theme
Dances with Wolves - Theme
Orff - Carmina Burana
Industiral:
Hunt for Red October - Hymn
Crimson Tide - Theme
The Rock - Theme
I think that Black Hawke Down will have a great soundtrack, perhaps for the Modern Era, though I'm not sure exactly what that should sound like.
So that's it for now, I'm sure that I'll come up with more later...

The mission!
Someone out there actually saw the Mission also! Cool.
As for Orff, Red October, Last of Mohicans, Glory: all great choices. jsw363 is a man of taste , ok, except for the rock and crimson tide
As for me, my computer is not good enough to walk and chew gum at the same time....

to jsw363's taste in music. I've been meaning to get Last of the Mohicans for years now...keep forgetting, somehow. Don't know anything about The Mission, though...
Pyrodrew, regardless of whether or not Apolyton is a good place to share music (I kinda doubt it), I can't help you becuase almost all my music is currently back in Pennsylvania . ...still working on getting it sent out to California.

On a more practical and general tone, instead of limiting the choice to 4-5 per era, just run winamp on the background - probably takes less cpu time than civ's internal mp3 decoder as well.

I was wondering if there was a limit to the number of songs you can place for each era ... and if so, how you can change that.
