RTS is evil!
That can not be emphasized and repeated enough.
Now, tactical battles would also detract from civ. For three reasons:
a. On a game of this scale, that would bog you down.
b. Civ is a nice strategic game. Tactics cheapens things so much.
c. I have yet to see a good tactical AI. I've beaten plenty of computers in plenty of games, and I know how to win a tactical battle. This would detract from civ. Think of it this way: You always have the best general, while the computer has an untrained one that always loses.

If the speed of my mouse clicks determines my fortunes in the game, I won't buy it.

Well, think of a pausable RTS, you hit the space bar (like Baldur's gate) and then you can give orders to your troops and take the time you want to think. Such a semi-RTS won't be click fest, but in the contrary it would be a real tactical game and the fact that all units move in the same time (opposed to the Turn based approach) reflects much more the reality than the traditionnal wargames (of course, such a game should have warganes rules like moral, formation...and good AI)
I think however that civ 3 shouldn't feature these semi realtime battles, because it will be too complex and too long for Firaxis to make, and a civ game take enough time to complete without some tactical combat.

Sorry people,
but my opinion is that 3D is great
you seem a bunch of folks allergic to 3D RTS to me
ok, TBS is what unites us together here in this forum,
but just face it, RTS has conquered the world, it is VERY VERY popular !
About civ3, the whole thing is about TBS of course, but:
3D is ok for me,
RTS battles, I am not reluctant

So RTS has conqured the world. If one really wants to follow the carrot, one plays C&C. Personally, I don't like 3D and I think it is absolutely inapropriate in Civ. A semi-RT battles could be implemented, but then only with an option of a standard battle screen. Still, I think, "borrow" the battle screen from CTP and modify it. I think that one works great.
Civ should not be 3D. CTP showed how good a Civ game can look. You will never reach that detail in 3D.

I don't see where people get this idea from. 3D graphics do not require the use of the mouse, at all. You're confusing interface design with graphics design - just because some RTS games are 3D and play like clickfests doesn't mean all will. You could theoretically use 3D graphics for most of the game, even with an underlying tile structure, and still use the traditional Civilization keyboard movements, or the proposed hexagonal system people are talking about.

I guess you're wrong Earthling. It's a long time ago I played ctp, but have you seen the graphics of Earth2150 ?? It's fully 3D, and it is awesome !!!
I am pretty sure the details catch up those of ctp.
Playing in 3D demands some practise with the mouse and getting used to, but when skilled it is and remains great IMO. (and in civ's case it won't be a "click-fest", since you can take your time for everything (except perhaps the RT-battles))
Just my thoughts...
