Psychology
I think that in the tech tree there should be more options than just our history's technology. For example, the current(civ2) tech tree had a focus on typical science. But it is possible that if a civ had of taken a different direction than they would be able to focus on psychology for example. This could give you a civ of psychologists, who have weak physical sciences, so they don't have phalanxes until you have had them for 500 years, but they are experts at things like brainwashing and mental attacks. Maybe this is getting a bit to 'fantasy-world' but I am not thinking that these people would be able to do obi-wan kenobi mind tricks (well maybe at the end of the psych tree) but more down to earth psychological things.

I'm sorry to say this, but this just seems typical of people who have no idea what psychology is about. It has nothing to do with brainwashing, it is a science of the mind and how it functions. It is especially well liked by americans, because it seems to "fix" problems with mainly chemical treatments. In Europe there is a favor for psychoanalysis (Freud's doctrine), which is not so well liked by americans because most of the time it does not fix the diseases, besides, it uses not use chemicals at all, it uses language to fix things. But another reason why it is not so well liked is because it is thought of as perverted because it brings everything back to sexual pleasure, but in fact, this does not always have to do with sex, penis, vagina, etc... But this is not a psychoanalist class, my main idea is: it is not a weapon!!!

I agree with G.C. It hasn't been used effectively as the main way to conquer civs throughout history. Stick to the military/science system we have now, just expand it...

If you have read Isaac Asimov's Foundation Trilogy than the second foundation is what I was thinking of. I didn't mean to say that brainwashing was a form of psychology, but it is a form of mental attack.

Brainwashing is an internal weapon, it actually is government policy, I mean, look at what they teach you in school, it is meant to give you pro-capitalist support and therefore anti-communist support, but this is part of life, the communist governments do it as well (although I do agree with them...). I'm only saying that countris that tried to put anti-government propaganda in people's minds have failed (take, for example, the way french bombers dropped tons of propaganda papers over berlin in 1940, did it work???), so why put a technology that fails each time into civ3????
