Is civ III unfinished?
I've been playing civ III for a while now and reading this forum.
My conclusion is that Civ III is buggy, but still most enjoyable.
After a while though the bugs stand in the way of further play.
Could this all be down to the fact that Civ III was unfinished when released? More time to think things through, implement concepts better and testing would have made Civ III a brilliant game?
If that is the case, it is my opinion that Infogrames take a running jump and that Firaxis and the Civ-III-fan-community (those that can program), collaborate to make Civ III what it should have been (Under the coordination of Firaxis). If you look at the contribution the Fans made to Baldur's Gate II in cooperation and with support from Blackisle, this is certainly possible.
If Firaxis doesn't have the time/manpower the fan-community certainly does.

But not the maturity. Nor the dedication of the Firaxis guys who worked through the night for months on end. Nor the good sense to know a feature from a bug many times.
[...shudder...]
These guys putting out a game? If they could have, they already would have.

..did you eventually pay for your copy in the end Yin, because it sounds like you've made up your mind not to buy?

Nope, never bought my copy. I was planning to go in on a Monday but played solid through the weekend and had deleted by Sunday night. I *did* however go in and buy another game from the computer guy ... some local Korean game that wouldn't even load on my English system!
Still, I don't feel cheated somehow.

....Ahhh but I bet Fraxis do though!
Using a full Month/100+ hours, it is really heart warming to see someone who really knows how to take the 'Try before you buy' to the extreme.

I thought he said he bought it, played it, hated it, stopped playing it, played it again, is waiting for the patch, deleted it, reinstalled it, and generally fiddle-farted in and out of some sort of uberangst.
[...looks away, lost in thought...]
Or am I thinking of Ayn Rand trying to decide on Objectivism's official aesthetic?

Commenting on the title
Yes, its unfinished, it needs polish (a lot).
But it is playable right out of the box, so its better than a lot of stuff out there.
And no matter what they released, this community would be coming up with all sorts of ideas to improve it.
I look forward to the improvements.

Never said I bought it. I had it on loan for a week. I stopped playing a while ago. Only played 4 full games. Took it back. If a miracle happens come Gold Edition some time, might pick it up then.

Yep . Though a more practical viewpoint may be "we'll see in a few patches", we can only hope .
As to my opinion, yes, Civ 3 is unfinished, yes, they should have spent a bit more time 'polishing it up', and yes, it is a truely awsome game. I downloaded the demo of Civ 2 for the Mac about three years ago -- within three days of playing the demo, I HAD to buy it -- and buy it I did. Civ 3, dispite it's quirks and faults, is keeping me at the same level of entertainment. Now, I hope they release patches and fix some stuff, and I'll be pretty po'ed if Faraxis doesn't, but they said they will, and I don't believe they're lying, so for now -- we just have to see.
But, in conclusion: to Faraxis on a great game! Now just -- finish it . Show my faith in your ability to overcome even the mindless screwing of Infogrames is well placed.
