Iriqouis rock
Mounted warriors, if you want a military expansion these guys are awesome. Attack of 3 and move of 2 makes them an awesome unit in early ages. Huge map 16civs and I have defeated egyptians and chinese by 500BC. Instead of building settlers I started out with 5 cities and started cranking out Mounted Warriors and I am just sweeping the countryside. Also I do not irrigate grassland at all, I mine all of it. Mined cows are awesome.

It's actually BEST expansionistic COMBO.
Yes, Iroq. rock.
And, expansionistic is not weak trait.
It's just underestimated trait.

Yes, Iroq rock.
I just finished a game that I won space race on 1330 AD, regular size, deity level. The critical events was that I got 2 free settlers early on. The first war triggered golden age which enabled me obtaining 6 cities and a leader for rushing a forbidden city. The second war lasted a long time, and produced 5 leaders, allowing me to build Newton University, Sistin Chapel, Universal Suffrage, Hoover Dam and SETI. The moment a leader was produced for SETI, I quit fighting, and concentrate on building research infra-structure. without any one of these wonders I probably would not win. In this game the AIs did no fighting among themselves so the tech advance was rapid. I won space race by a hair.
I tried the same strategy on a large map, didn't work. After expanded to 11 cities, I still could not build the forbidden city. Now try to figure out how to win on a large map on deity level.

It's my impression that the Iroqouis are slightly overrated. They are only good for warmongers, while for peaceful players nothing could be worse. As a peace lover, I don't start early wars unless pressed to, and the Expansionist is the worst ability in the game as well. I just can't live without Scientist or at least Commercial.

Expansionist > *.* in large+
In large or huge land masses, expansionist civs are the best. Better than industrious, better than commercial, better than the rest.
My expansionist, large/huge, pangea/continent games have been incredible. I generally get a five to six tech lead EARLY, with extra settlers in each game so far, and more warriors than I can shake a stick at.
Pretty hard to beat.

Again, Iroq is my favor. Just won a space race on 1360 AD, huge map, 16 civ deity level. The most important factor in this game was the timing. In this regard, the mounted warrior is the most effective offensive unit at it's time. The first great leader allowed me to rush build the Sistin Chapel. With cheap cathedrals, I can change to republic rather quickly, and start to do some serious research. Once the research rate is at par with the top AIs, tech trading can raise tons of gold which positively helps to build the infra-structure. Towards the end game, all the AIs changed to communism, resulted in a slowed down research rate. To win space race is not hard. This was a pre-patch game. I am not sure this approach can win in a post-patch game, because selling some of the conquered cities is part of the strategy. In a large or huge map, 16 cities are needed before a forbidden city can be built. I have tried the same approach with Persian civ, but was not successful because it took to long to build the cathedral. I think at higher level, a religious civ has the best chance to win.
