MOO include with latest CGW
That is, the one with the review of Civ3 in it. if you buy the version with the CD demo discs, you get the full version of MOO.
Finally I can stop using the CD. the few seconds it would take to access on some screens made me impatient. it didn't really need the CD, since it only takes up 11MB on my hard drive.
does still use the accursed copy protection, though. I need to print that up in an easy paper sometime....

I found that after several hundred games one tends to remember enough of the protection scheme that one doesn't need to look up anything

Here's a lot of the work done for you already. I downloaded this from somewhere, and have to say the pictures are a lot better than those in my hand-drawn chart. But it would be better if the ships were shown in page number order and labeled with page number...

Do you still have to screw around with memory? When I tried playing on my new computer I always get a message about needing more expanded(?) memory. When I finally figured out how to get enough to run the game it crashed when I was picking the game parameters with the same message

Garth,
What OS were you using? I have been trying to get MOO to run under Win2k, to no avail. I get that message every time, nomatter how I set up the shortcut or config.nt and autoexec.nt.
Has anyone been able to get MOO to run under W2k?

I do not need the print out either, I may mess up on one, but not all three chances.
I have been playing without the CD or years, I think the version I am going from was my 3.5 one. I have it burned to a CD for installation purposes.
I can not say about win2000, but I got Orion to play on OS/2, DOS, Win95, Win98 and NT. Be sure to select 2048 on EMS for the properties of the PIF for MOO. I have had problems getting enough conventional mem for the sound at times and I usually do not use it. Do you have the device= in config.sys for EMM386?

BTW you can get Virtual CD3 or 4 to use any game without mounting the CD. I use it for all of my games, including Civ3. This lets me jump from one game to another and not go looking for the CD. The SafeDisc ones take a long time to copy down to the HD, but it only needs to be done once. I should say most games, since version 3 would not work on Diablo2 LOD, I have not tried it on version 4 since I finished Nightmare and stopped.

OS/2 is a better OS than Windoze...
I usually just dual-boot DOS on one of my *nix machines. I run QEMM under DOS so I have absolutely no problems with memory. QEMM is the memory manager for DOS, I can easily get 610K+ conventional memory after loading all the drivers.

Yes I owned back in the day and it was great. Then they sold out and it was gone. I can play all of my old dos games in win98 SE just fine, including Ascendency and Star General.

Printout!? Who the zark wants to squint at some blurry printout every time the manual check comes up? Since MOO seems to be freely available these days, I, Cynoid Cypher, will reveal my easy MOO-playing secret: Change the following two bytes in STARMAP.EXE at the following offsets (the numbers are in hexadecimal):
+71be5: from 75 to 90
+71be6: from 0d to 90
What's that, you say? "Jeez, Cynoid, I thought you said this was going to be easy!" Pfaugh! Kids these days. TANSTAAFL.
When the game asks you to identify a ship, pick any one. All answers are now correct!

I like having the test for the ships. It is part of the appeal, but then I know them all by heart anyway.
