Windows XP Compatibility and new patch
I was able to play Civ3 in Windows XP by using the Windows 98/ME Compatibility mode prior to installing the patch released today.
However, after installing the patch, I am now unable to play Civ3, even when trying to use the different Compatibility Modes (Windows 95, Windows 98/ME, Windows 2000).
Is there a solution, or do I have to wait for an XP patch?

I just installed XP about 3 weeks ago, and prior to that I was playing Civ3 on ME. I quit playing since I wanted to wait until the patch fixed things.
However, I just installed the patch and tried to play and it crashed after going through the screens that you can access with the function keys, e.g. F8, F9, etc. I rebooted and the same thing happened.
I have had no problems playing Wizardry 8 on XP in the past few weeks, and I have had *no* problems at all in 6+ years that were *specific* to my computer. All the problems I've had with games in the past were commonly known problems addressed in a patch.
I mention this because I don't want to hear anyone say it's a problem with my computer.
I would assume other XP'ers are having the same problem.

I am running Windows XP Release Candidate 2. I have been running Civ3 just fine for several weeks. It's running in standard mode (not compatibility mode). I have not yet installed the patch, but Windows XP is just running fine for me pre-patch.
I have a Geforce2 with the latest Nvidia drivers and DirectX 8.1. I'm not sure if the problem you folks are experiencing is video driver related.

I just uninstalled and re-installed Civ3 and the problems went away.
I also have a GeForce2 with the latest Detonator drivers. Yes, the drivers that were released earlier this week.

This is definately happening. We're working on the problem now. Let me know if you get this on an OS other than XP.
Thanks.

I have Windows XP and have never had any problems with Civ3. However after I installed those new drivers, the problems started to occur but that's mainly crashing when starting internet explorer.
Don't install those drivers! Use your old or whatever drivers you had been using before, they have worked very well for me(I have Geforce as well).
I have never had any problems with Civ3 on WinXP. But the drivers which should fix problems(which aren't there), cause NEW problems so...

Definitely a Problem...
The patch definitely causes me a problem under WindowsXP. While the advisor screens will load and exit fine, attempting to use either the Wonders or Demographics screens immediately crashes the game (4 times in a row, just to be sure).
Prior to installing the patch, the game was smooth as silk.
Firaxis, thanks for responding so quickly to this thread. I'd ask for a timeline on the fix, but I assume you'd just tell me 'as soon as possible', right? Fair enough. If it helps you any (although I'm sure you've gotten enough reports by now), I'm having the problem on a PIII 500 with 256MB of RAM and an nVidia TNT2-based video card (latest Detonator drivers).
