Strategic Bombing
I know this must have been discussed before, but how could they model strategic bombing? A spy/probe team-like menu where you pick targets? No model at all? Do you think this is an important enough element of modern warfare to be modelled?

A second question, should bombing damage buildings more than other attacks?

I think it is, I would like air warfare to be very different, no more moving planes around, I want an area planes can attack and you can like select the airbase and have them launch planes to attack something. In gameplay if you wanted to attack something specific you could click and hold down having a pop up menu come up and you can select residental, industry, utilities, improvements and if you have good enough intelligence about the city you'll get a list of possible improvements to bomb. It is not guarenteed that you will destroy anything specifically an improvement, and if we just my systems idea you can't destroy the whole system, soo...

Hmmm, I don't know- a lot of modern warfare is essentially taking out specific structures. The second-level bomber (Stealth Bomber or whatever) should be able to target specific city improvements with a reasonable chance of success...

Especially Aqueducts and Sewer Systems.

Even in world war 2, the water works of a city under seige was usually hit first from the air (Warsaw, Leningrad, ect)

no water+no power=no factories! Hit the utilities first.

This is a good idea, to be able to pick a target, but I would think that picking a target should incur a penalty of missing, where as bomb whatever you can should be normal. Also the defender should be able to rebuild things more quickly if they have been bomed. Examine the Productivity numbers of Germany in WWII. They built more planes by the last few months of the war then they ever did.

I just saw yestrday an documentary about strategic bombing on WWII on discovery and I was thinking at the role of strategic bombing in civ games when I run into this thread!
I think that the strategic bombing would be
realistic if the game would have 'dedicated' factories. A dedicated factory would be an improvement that would produce certain units, like planes or tanks. Would use a certain ammount of resources, but its production would be not corelated to whtever the city is producing a the moment. Maybe this is a suggestion on its own .
Altough I think this would add too much micro-management to the game.

Maybe there should still be the usual air stuff (ie fighters and bombers can attack other units), but there should also be an option for the bombers to attempt to raze a particular improvement inside a city. Any more complex than this and it'll probably be too much micromanagement.

I think dedicated factories are probably the best way to solve ICS, but that's another issue. No, what I meant was a spy like menu where you can either attack the sitting unit, or attempt (at a penalty and a large percentage chance of missing) of hitting any city improvement of your choice. Alternatively, (to solve the "factory" problem), you can attempt at destroying the unfinished unit/building currently in production...

No, I agree that you should be able to choose what you want to attack in a town, but I'm saying that I disagree with the above suggestions that we get rid of the current air force system (eg fly a stealth fighter unit around).
