What makes an AI civ vote for you as UN leader?
I tried the UN. I had everone gracious towards me, and gifted like Santa on speed. Still no one voted for me.

I had a few wars with folks throughout the game, maybe that kept them from voting for me. Is there any way to tell how an AI civ might vote? Obviously, their attitude (gracious in my case) isn't a good indicator.

I play with the doplomatic victory disabled, but I belive making the voters declare war(via alliances) on your rival in the vote would work..

Perhaps think of it this way:

It might be easier to get them to hate someone else more than you than to get them to like you more than anyone else.

and of course, give them goodies. be selective in your wars and consider only totally conquering rivals, since civs will hold a grudge for a long time.

That's how I did it....quite a few turns before I finished building the UN, I started giving 5 gold per turn to those civs that I hadn't warred with (2 others constantly hated me). When it was time to vote, everyone but the two voted me in.

I have also struggled with this. I think it's best to work out who your opponent would be in a vote, then use your resources not to make the other civs like you, but to turn them against that opponent. Madmario mentioned military alliances, which is usually best, but a trade embargo can also do the job.
