Civ 2 Style Railways
Civ 2 Style Railways are finally here!!
An example of what they look like:
Preview removed, broken link.
I realise that the railways look excessively straight, but then again, so did Civ 2's. And where would a Civ 2 Style railway be if it didnt look like Civ 2's railways??
Anyway, I hope you enjoy this mod
* IMPORTANT *
All files here are zip files. After downloading, make sure the extension of the file is .zip Rename the file if necessary. Then you should be able to unzip without trouble

Skanky u have just filled 1 of my biggest graphic wishes of Civ3. Cant stand having almost the entire tile covered by railroad. Makes it difficult to pick out units. Not to mention seeing what terrain is underneath or if its mined or irrigated. Major thanks for this graphics mod.

NorthSwordsman be patient. Its probably because Apolyton is switching servers. They are usually pretty good about keeping links updated from my experience.

Skanky, they look real good on my map. :-). Thanks. I prefer orderly roads/railroads, and the ones Firaxis put in were a nightmare.
Is there a way to make them a tad darker? They are very very light, perhaps darken them up a little if you ever have time? Thanks.

Thanks for the comments everyone
Working on the darker version now, but as usual, it will take time

Your attached graphic of the mod looks good.
Unfortunately, I just escaped the Ancient era in my current game, so now I have to wait to see what it looks like!
Thanks for all the hard work!

I've gotten far enough for Steam Power (and then some), and finally snagged the coal... and you know what?
Your railroad mod looks GOOD!
Thanks, again.

Love straight rails!
Love the straight rails.
I am in awe of the amount of work it must have taken - and yet people are still not satisfied! Do it yourself, guys, if you have any complaints!

Update: 2 new versions of the Straight Railways
Basically made them a bit darker than before.
This one is 15% darker than before.

This one I tried first, 25% darker than the original.
Perhaps too dark - you be the judge
A test screenshot is included in both these new versions for those who havent built railways in their game yet

Skanky, I liked the Raildark 15 best. It's perfect. The 25 is terrific too, really stands out, doesn't hide much detail, really. They both are great, but the 15 just looks PERFECT to me for some reason. You did great work on both! Thank you so much!

Brilliant work!!!!!!!!!
I'll be trying it out tonight. Is it just a little too different to the original Civ3 graphics? Then again maybe that's just me.

I dont know, the straight railways seem perfectly natural to me...
Perhaps that because of the *hours* i spent editing them, encoding my brain with "Straight Rail Syndrome"
For those interested, im using DarkRail15 as my default railways

Bubba_B: My other railways, and some by other people can be found in
My Skanky Railways Thread
Kaiser Dragon: I put that in the readme inside the zip!! I guess that doesnt help too much before you have unzipped it though Anyway, unzip it to civ3/art/terrain and all will be well.
* Dont forget to backup your original railways.pcx file *

Hmm, I'm having recurrent problems downloading the raildark 15% mod. I can only seem to download about 128k until the connection breaks and the file is broken. It seems to be happening again and again at exactly the same file size.
Anyone having the same problems? If not could you repost the files? Perhaps to another forum such as in civfanatics?

The original civ2rails file stops at 30K, raildark30% stops at 131K. All files should be 256k in size. Something has gone really screwy at apolyton.
Again, I'd be REALLY grateful if you would post them in a forum at civfanatics, or send them to me at soufie77@hotmail.com

soufie77: I just tested each of the 3 files here, they all appear to be working fine. Did you remember to unzip the file first??
Im guessing that the files were downloaded properly, as the file sizes you quoted are the actual zipped file sizes.
Regardless, ive sent an unzipped version of Raildark15 to the address you gave.

Kaiser, I had the same problem. So what I decided to try doing is download the attachment, then rename it (and change the extension too) to raildark.zip. Winzip then recognized it after I changed the extension name. You can also try to right click on the file and select "save as" and see if it works that way. I would just rename the attachment with a .zip extension. Worked for me.

Thanks for sending the file! Received it without any problems. Unfortunately, due to heavy workload, I won't be able to try it out until the weekend. Oh well.

Nifty. They look cool!
I wonder though, if you could do a `thin' version? Say, about half the width they are now. They're still too thick for my tastes... I like to see the terrain!
A thin version of the dark ones would be just about perfect for my tastes... I might have to try to fix `em myself...

Fintilgin, this version of the railways (or all 3 actually) are 4 pixels thick on the vertical/horizontal axis. Making it half as wide would mean that the railway was 2 pixels in width, with no gaps inbetween. Dont get me wrong, Ive tested a limited version it and it does look good.
Feel free to modify my version, Ill look forward to the results as they should look good
