Population rushing
In the early game while you are still in despotism the rush buy feature in all your cities uses population, as opposed to gold. The first time you use it a population point = 40 shields, every time after(this is on a per city basis) it is 20 shields per person. With this you can rush all infrastructure, or churn out a super army very quickly and eliminate several of your neighbors. In the ancient era all military units are cheap so that a city on good terrain can churn out swordsmen/horsemen/mounted warriors/legions, whatever it is you've chosen to crush your enemy with, every other turn.
Its consequence is very light as well, your city will have one of its citizens suffer unhappyness for 20 for each of these rushes you do, However all happyness modifiers are applied last so you can generally not have to deal with it as military units will quell all unrest since the city will be relatively small.
As the game progresses the best way to rid the city of the unhappyness is to grow it to its max city quickly and just let the population rushing unhappyness spread out over perhaps 6 or 7 people, so that every 20 turns the unhappyness from 6 of the population rushes will go away.
This also has another side effect though, early game growth will be alittle stifled since you are killing off your population they arent gathering shields, commerce and food for the city, but thats a small price to pay as well.
Though they mentioned it is being killed in the patch, so this may all be useless soon.
