Some research on Civ3
It ocurred to me that there might be a relationship between satisfaction with Civ3 and style of play in Civ2. So I've devised a little questionaire to test it. Please answer the following questions: (Unfortunately, the poll software won't work for this)
1. How long have you played Civ2? [Civ TWO]
a) 5+ years
b) 3-4 years
c) 1-2 years
d) less than 1 year
e) never played it
2. What best describes your strategy in Civ2? [Civ TWO]
a) Always try to get to Alpha Centauri
b) Usually try to get to Alpha Centauri
c) Sometimes Alpha Cetauri, sometimes world conquest
d) Usually world conquest
e) Always world conquest
3. Which statement best describes your level of satisfaction with Civ3? [Civ THREE]
a) Extremely satisfied
b) Very satisfied
c) Somewhat satisfied
d) not very satisfied
e) not satisfied
Since this is a self-selecting sample it will not be statistically valid. Still, the results might be interesting. I'll compile the results on Friday.

A note for my answer on 3. I would have rather just answered "Satisfied". I'm not exactly "Very Satisfied", but I'm not just "Somewhat Satisfied". It's a good decent civ experience for me, so I'm "Satisfied."

1) a - since Civ2 came out, played Civ1 b4 that.
2) c - usually AC in a "straight" game. also played a lot of scenarios, usually they were conquering in nature.
3) d - I expect more.

Played Civ2 since Chris Fairfax gave it to me, which I think was 1997, like to kill everyone in Civ2, used the good old ICS and BAB strategies. If I couldn't win using these I would as a last ditch effort build the AC spaceship. Am Perfectionist, Expansionist. Played CivI, CivCtP, and SMAC for last 2 years.
I think your theory is correct, and those who had devoloped the best strategies are whining most!

For the record, played Civ from '91 'till '97 (dropped off a bit from '95), Civ 2 '97 'till '00, SMAC-X from, er, '99(?) 'till present, CTP for about a month after I got it ('99) 'till I realized it ain't no Civ.
Civ 3 still fun too! Hm, maybe just 'cause I have yet to finish a game.

none of the above

My goal was always to build the best empire I could. I rarely went for world conquest but if I was repeatedly attacked by some civilisation I sometimes wiped them out. If I could, of course.
I'm bored of Civ3 because it takes such a long time to get from age to age. Frankly, I played so much Civ2 that Civ3 is just 'new skin for the old ceremony' (to quote Leonard Cohen).

I like most aspects of Civ 3. However, late-game tedium really brings the its score down for me.

I've played a handful of AC victories, but "always world conquest" is a lot closer than "usually".

I don't have a problem with changing strategies. I DO have a problem with defecting cities decimating huge armies, espionage being almost impossible and turns taking over 5 minutes to complete...

c) Somewhat satisfied
I find that the addition of culture etc. has been directly tied to my satisfaction with the game. I was never a big war monger until CIV3, where on higher levels its hard not to be.
My really only successful high level games has been a combination of really heavy expansion and a bunch of bullying. On the lower levels (i.e. my first games) I was much happier 'cuz I liked the culture aspect.
