Goto Home City...
I was just wondering how many people regularly (or ever) used this command?

Your vote does matter!

I use it often enough, especially for ships. Probably a specific Goto Home City command is not needed as long as there is a general Goto City command to replace it.

My 2 cents.

There are situations where I want to send units to their home cities so it needs to be easy to do but a specific command isn't required.

Yah, for me I use it for ships. I found that units often got 'confused' in the game if you told them to go to a home city. Once in a while they would just go back and forth between two squares. So I stopped using it. I think it should have a specific command.

When I want a unit to return to its home city, I usually make that decision from within the city itself, calling the unit back home. Otherwise, for the unit itself, the general GoTo is what I always use.

Wow I didn't know there was a command like this I gotta use it in SMAC now moving those ships across the map is tedious, man I can't believe I didn't know this it would have made being the Pirates a lot easier in SMACX. *Par4 walks off mopingly and talks in a depressed voice*

Yeah, I use it quite a bit for ships and units that are just out on scouting routes around the city. I also use it sometimes when finding a new unit in a goodie hut (eg a legion) which I want to use for defense in the city. Saves me a fair bit of time. Please don't remove it, if that's what you're hinting on

Does that mean that Support of Units again is handled not globally but by each city individually? bahh I hope not.

I also use it very often. It's mostly later in the game, where I have lots of units, in this way I don't need to micromanage so many units!

Keep up the good work Firaxis, but please focus on Civ3, not Dinosaurs, I have waited since I was 10 for a Civ3!

I've never actually used this command. I have occaisionally used the "go home to nearest city" to change the support for a unit, though.

I had used it a few times in Civ II, but because of my fear of the AI's pathfinding inconsistencies, I won't use it anymore.

i play SMAC and i use the goto city feature but i never use goto home city (i'm not even sure if it's in SMAC) and i think as long as you can pick which city you want your unit to goto then there is no need to clutter up the interface with rarely used options

korn469

please give us units supported by the civ and not by a city!

I don't think I've ever used it. Usually I'll click/hold on any square I want the unit to go to (often NOT the home city).

Oh yeah, I'll chime in against city-supported units UNLESS you plan to incorporate a city-state government construct. Modern civs should support units on the national level.

I use it from times to times.

CTP's goto command to any sqare of the map is much better and I do hope that support for units will be on a civilization basis and not a city basis, you need to cut down the amount of micromanagement.

Because of severe unreliability the "go to" is rarely used by me.Perhaps later between cities that are railroaded. Its' just not reliable.

I may use it more if it worked properly.

See, that was my first reaction. Will the support model still be city-based? But the question is, how realistic is a whole-civ support model? Maybe a region-based model could be worked? How about a "go to nearest city in home region" command?

I think its a stupid command. I just hold down the mouse where i want it to go and then release it. Then the unit moves there. Way better then the go to command and its faster.

I esp. used it when having to temporarily reinforce a city thats under attack, or a new city building defense units. I found it very useful. Using the mouse to go back home (or anywhere, for that matter), or picking from a list of cities (esp. when you are conquering the world) is annoying.

I sometimes used it (ships mostly) if I got sick of moving my units, but sometimes its also a bit risky to use it because a lot of the times the unit will go the wrong way or take a long route. So it can be quite a gamble to use the GoTo.

One of the big bugs was when you told a unit to go from one city to the other, it wouldn't use the damn roads!! It goes over mountains or something! It worked good when railroads were built though.

No, I've never used the feature. But then, I never automate any units, so I might not be a good sample.

But, if it matters at all, (it's not what you were asking), I'll throw my vote in on the side of civilization wide support for units. Especially for the modern age, it just makes sense. Here's a weird idea: Maybe it could become possible to support a unit from the national treasury, with gold instead of shields. That way you could keep low maintence `national guard' type units supported by each city and support your more expensive stuff from your bustling economy.

I have made the same suggestion, using gold for support would have many advantages among them realism and the fact that to afford a big army you would need a big economy, as it is anibody can have big army.

The Problem with city-based support is that even your cities not next to the enemy border have to produce units, or else the cities next to the border run out of shields. For example you have a size 30 city far away from the border and there is a size 10 right next to it. Now, I would prefer to build all my units in the size 10 cause then I dont have to care so much about moving (=less micro). In Civ2 with railroads it wasnt much of a problem (except when it was on a different continent/island then it _was_ a problem).
Having units to move to the frontier is really lame and boring work. I like it more when there are wars right next to my border. There is a lot more action then.

I really dont like to see a city-based support model.

I donīt need this feature because I use the normal GOTO CITY command. Thatīs the way it is. But if it isnīt too much work keep that command.

I only use it if the unit is far away and has one movement point but there is a straight path so I don't have to move it every turn.

I usually use the "Goto" command, except when it doesn't work.

Hi,

I never use that command. In fact, when I right click on a unit to get a list of orders I see the command and then I think: "Wow! What a useless command. HaHa! "

Sorry, but that's just the way it is.
