I've never used the GOTO Home shortcut. But this is because in SMAC the generic goto command was very good - the pathfinding was execellent and only rarely did units get stuck.
And if Firaxis is reading this...
What do we want? Civ3! When do we want it? Now! (Ok Ok - just don't do a Blizzard and delay it too much...)

Clicking to move a unit's fine is you can see the destination but it's too slow when the city's on the other side of the map. Being able to popup a list of cities (& waypoints) and selecting one with the keyboard is the most efficient way to do things.

1. I'm for a regional unit-support, then country level. Home city level can be kept only on early level of nation development (in SMAC term, for basic S.E.)
2. I rarely used GOTO Home. In SMAC the common GOTO work fine.
I always used GOTO nearest city for Planes, but I hate when during a transfer flight (to the limit of plane autonomy) the computer, at the start of second turn of moving, compute that there is a nearest base than mine target and switch the destination
Please "address" that!
On GOTO city subject, when I list the available cities (for CIV trade caravan or SMAC Alien artifact) I would like to have some hints about cities on the same continent, cities only available by sea transport, cities with specials transfer available (CIV airport link, SMAC psi gate, etc.) for quick unit movement.
The distance shouldn't be the main number showed, you should instead show turn of movement needed (taking into account available road/railroad and one turn shortcut (airports). And please take count of special unit movement (in SMAC, air unit GOTO show number of turn needed by ground unit - counting terrain movement reduction and the like).
Thank you for asking, sorry for extended answer!

I have never used the Goto Home command, but I tend to move each of my units individually and rarely use any extended movement commands (except possibly for caravans/freight when grouping them to assist in later Wonder construction).

Does home city = the city that supports the unit?
Does this mean that CivIII will have city-supported units, instead of civilization-supported units?
If units are still city-supported, I think that Firaxis is missing a great opportunity to advance it's version of the Civilization game. Units should not be tied to a single city.

I use it after I'm through exploring. If the unit jerk around, I will move him serveral square, and then if he has a strait shop at his city, I will used the goto command. I also used it for ship when tranporting trade.

Good pick-up, Slingshot.
I'd prefer civ supported units too.

There are a lot of good reasons to have civ-supported units, the best of which is the fact that units are more portable.
I would love to have a feature wherein units are still given a home city, but leave out the support/happiness dependance.
Maybe then we could expand the power of the Goto Home command. Variants could be enabled with a right click, and they could include:
- scout/defend home, where a unit would patrol the city borders and go home if enemies are detected.
- defend home trade, where a unit follows a trade line (or whatever CivIII has) between home city and partner city.

Defend city, defend trade route Nice ideas. I'd like to add "defend (patrol) border" also.
But how could you defend trade route (?caravan?) outside borders?

I've never used this feature.
Oh, and here's one more vote for national level unit support.

I've never used it. Throw it out. The 'goto city' command will suffice.

Turf it. Goto specific city with a good path finding routine is all you really need.
Is anyone else sensing that Firaxis could be in a lot of hot water if this game isn't spectacular?
Also, I agree with nationally supported units as well...

Keep it. Even if some people do not use it, why should all the rest of us suffer because you want to save a single, pitiful line of text in the right-click menu?

Yeah! Even if some people don't like it, just leave it in, in case some do. (I personally don't really use it - the general goto is sufficient).

I'd use it more often if it were reliable. It will regulary leave the road or railroad and take off accross the mountains for some unknown reason. Also, I don't think a unit should prompt for user attention every time it comes in contact with a foreign civ. Perhaps have the option to prompt if your near a waring nation, but otherwise, more automation of the tedious is great.
I also cast my vote for a more a national support model. Perhaps this would depend on government type??

Don't know about the comments of the goto home - for me it worked quite well, in SMAC that is - sometimes the pathfinding was even good enough to pick the correct route (length 50+ tiles) even though my destination was only 6 or 7 tiles away, as-the-crow-flies.

I frequently use the Goto Home City command. I find it extremely useful for ships, but also often for land units; in SMAC I'll often send my defenders out to monoliths and then send them home on autopilot, or something.

Never use it. I think it's a little useless. If there is going to be some kind of GOTO command in Civ3, you should be able to designate a home square for any particular unit or group of units. For example, you may have an air base along the coast used for smashing your occasional enemy across the ocean. After each little brawl, it might be useful to have them return back to their "duty location."

I think it would be better to have a goto nearest city than home city, for repairing units and such. The regular goto command can be used for sending a unit to the home city.

I use it a lot in the finall stages of the game, when I'm at peace with everybody and I have enough money to buy all they cities. After I buy one, I order all its units to return home in order to disband it and recive the shields from disbanding it.
In rest, I use Goto City.
