How do you SLOW the game down?
I know this is going to sound really weird, especially to those with slow computers.

But I have tried to play SMAC on my new 1 GhZ, 256 Mb computer, and the game is insanely fast. The problem is that the game is too fast. The units move around so fast, you can hardly see what they did. The screens pop up too fast to see. It takes away some of the enjoyment.

How do you slow the game down?

I wasn't aware that the game could be any slower.
Seriously though, I thought that you had to press enter to go through the pop ups.

And I assume that you have *unchecked* under the advanced preferences the "move units with orders quickly" as well as the "move all units quickly" and "fast battle resolution"?

(You get these from within the game by menu/game/advanced preferences)

There are a lot of slowdown programs available.

Try some searching sites (google, altavista,...)

Maybe the following may help. Start another CPU intensive task which loops, (ex. say a pgm counting to 1000 and starting over or something) and assign the multitasking options to smac and the CPU intensive task, giving the majority of the resources to the looping PGM:

To set multitasking options ....

1 Right-click the icon for the program’s shortcut you want to modify, and then click Properties.

2 In the Properties window, click the Misc tab.

3 Adjust the Idle Sensitivity slider:

To give a background program (the looper) more CPU resources, move the slider toward Low.
To give a foreground program fewer CPU resources (smac), move the slider toward High.

This might be different for you though, I have a older operating system ... if it is different try looking in your systems help under >>> multitasking options.

Todd Hawks just reminded me. I read about some slowdown programs for "old" games at:

http://www.theunderdogs.org/

You should find some links there in the FAQ, etc.

(I have a suspicion that this has just decreased the resale value of my old 386SX-16)

This little prog works fine for me. Try something like 50% to begin with.

Play Civ3... you'll be happy with how fast SMAC is!

(Hmm... something tells me that I should not have posted this...)
