well i dont know about eu2 vs civ3, but for the reader's choice, i have this feeling that rts fans are more than tbs....
btw, on CGO(CGM), Empire Earth is not even in the nominees(for best strategy and best rts)

While I agree with their decision, I still have no idea why IGN insists on calling EU a turn based strategy game.

I don't know if it fits into any other category. Maybe RTS but its not played like an RTS and doesn't appeal to the traditional RTS crowd. The general feel of EU2 is that of a TBS game.

EU II is the only actual RTS (real time strategy) out there. Most RTSs are actually RTTs (real time tactical).

While I think EU2 is better than Civ3, can anyone really take IGN's position seriously when they call EU2 a TBS? Any idiot, playing 5 seconds of the game will realize it is a real time game! Jeez!

There are enough gaming websites and magazines there that most of the "hot" games will be voted the best one way or another.
I think they should just create a new category called "slugfest." That's what most of the so called "RTS" are.

EU2- A real time game with pauses.
I think that is what makes it a TBS

Wait a minute! Empire Earth isn't a TBS either, so why should it be in the same category as Civ 3?
IMHO, if the past two years are any indication, strategy gaming, particularily TBS gaming, is dead.

The combat portion is TBS, which takes up most of the playing time.

No, the combat resolution is real time, the training, building and moving of units is TB. Maybe it is a little unclear. My point was the RTS element (ie the one that is also MP) is very strategic, much more so than the usual RTS games. For the strategy gamer wishing to play MP there are few options outside of RTT (I like the term) games. Obviously MP SMAC or civ2 is best, but hard to arrange sometimes and very time consuming. Shogun is a good choice IMO. Games are between 10-30 minutes, and as I said, very challenging

Well, Strangelove, remember, only 1 or 2 TBS games were released, they HAD to put civ in the category to be fair

I think they're both excellent games...but I don't compare them because they both play so differently

You can play EU2 as a TBS or a RTS simply by adjusting its settings. I play EU with every significant event set to pause the game. So its a 365 turns per year game where the computer hits 'end turn' for me automatically when nothing significant happens
I think they are right in categorising it that way because the game has far more in common with TBS strategy titles than realtime clickfests that claim to be strategic. I can only assume EE got pushed in to give the category some competition.
