Stacking workers or NOT
Here is a tip is discovered (the hard way).

One posting I read somewhere discussed the benefits of stacking your workers to perform certain tasks. The theory being that 2 workers working on one tile is better than 2 workers working on 2 tiles because you can start to use the improvement sooner. I have found this to be true when it comes to roads and irrigation.

But I found when building a Railroad, one worker per tile! String them out. I had my one coal resource run out on me before my railline was complete. The single workers who had started their tiles completed them, but I couldnt start anymore until I beg/borrowed/stole another source.

This assumes coal is scarce, of course.
