Stealth Fighter?

Could someone explain to me the purpose of the Stealth Fighter? Since it can't be used for air superiority and the Stealth Bomber has a far better bombing strength and the costs are almost the same, what purpose would building the fighter serve? I must be missing something because I can't figure it out.

Building one gives you something to do in the modern age. You can disband them in your corruption ridden cities to help finish those eighty-turn libraries and such.

At first I thought it may put up more of a fight when the odd interceptor got lucky and detected the stealth planes. But it seems to me it gets shot down just as much as the stealth bombers anyway....
