Which Civ2 version?
We don't believe that either Conflicts in Civilization or Fantastic Worlds are viable choices so it comes down to ... - Civ2 Single Player - latest version v 2.42
- Civ2 MultiPlayer - latest version v 5.3 or 5.4 or Julius' NoLimit patch (all are compatible)
- or as several of the old-timers (like us) have both - it doesn't matter...

I think this thread is a bit premature, since we didnt decide whether we are going to play Civ2 at all.
Why not Civ3???

And why did we put it into a Civ2 forum?

Why MP???->there is only 1 person who plays.(ie 1 humanplayer)
-->Because we 'all' 'know' how Civ2 works(we can better anticipate effects of our decisions),Civ3 is only out a few(2) months and there are still some battles going on civ2 vs Civ3 etc.
(I also have the impression Civ2 is faster then Civ3(but I only played it once,so...))
-->Because there is still very much to do in Civ3,civ2 is 'now' better suited for such projects.

Civ3 is a too new game, like said before, and I think we'll get a better number of members with staying to Civ2, because everyone seems to think that it was perfect compared to Civ3.
But I don't want to run for presidency, so basically the version of the game is irrelevant.

Dont you think it will be more interesting if it is harder for us to anticipate the effects of our decisions?

Some of us only have MGE! If I play some turns, someone with 2.42 will not be able to use the save.

And some of us only have SP with the expansion pack (Conflicts and FW)!
Why not ToT? To me it's the most interesting version of them all. Specially those sci-fi and fantasy worlds.

I may be able to get my copy of CiC back, which I'd given to a friend. He swears he's going to return it, but first he has to play just one more time...

The limit of versions of different people can strongly effect the Presidency elections. Can a ToT version player not play a 2.42 version save?

(personally I have no clue)

It is a problem of backward compatibility. The older versions (lower version numbers) cannot play newer version save games, but newer version can play old versions. Alas, once saved as a newer version, there is no going back.
If I can get my copy of CiC back this weekend, I will renege my vote for MGE...

If we have more players join, we could eventually have separate games, one for each of the versions. I think we still have far too few for this now, tho.
Any other ideas for a solution?

Knowing this,I think it's a logical conclusion to play with the oldest version(probably 2.42).Since the game has to be posted regularly so ppl can check what's going on.If it's posted in the oldest version everyone can load it and see what to do,and since only the president is playing only he/she has to create savefiles everyone can use.
I know playing like this has the drawback that only someone with the oldest version can be president, but on the other hand EVERYONE ELSE can do his/her job even if he/she has an other version.
(eg: someone starts with MGE and the cityplanner only has Civ2.42
==>forget the planning)

As your new president , I need to play in version 2.42. My goons will retrieve my copy from a friend, hopefully by sunday evening (-6 GMT). Iirc, it is the Conflicts in Civilization version - that is 2.42, n'est-ce pas? That also gives everybody time to vote for game preferences if they have not already done so.
In any case, I will post a 4000bc save game. Let's hope that all wil be able to use it...

Bottom line - we want to exclude the fewest possible people from playing thus, the group with the fewest must be cast out.
I believe MPGE will be the most common.

For the record, Your Supreme Poobah, Sir, it transpires that Conflicts in Civilization is version 2.62 - and (IMHO) is more buggy than 2.42

SG[1], it remains to be seen which version I have. Long ago I purchased the original version. Later I bought the CiC add-on. Later still MGE. Which of the first two I can shake out of my friend, I no longer know. With luck it is the first...

IIRC 2.42 is the latest patch to the original Civ2.
