Its not just corruption - some sort of score averaging hurts large civs
I just conquered a major civ, the biggest in the game. When I had done so I noticed I had dropped right down in the civ score and culture ratings.
It seems the computer does some sort of averaging based on number of cities divided by number of improvements to arrive at your score. This means if you conquer or build a large number of cities instead of ending up at the top of the civ ratings, you can actually drop. Your main cities might have all the improvements and lots of wonders but if you don't have say a temple in every city your score drops.
Same goes for the science rate. Its seems to be averaged somehow. Which means the more you conquer, the more your science rate goes down even if your main cities have every science improvement.
Why?

I did not notice this during my conquer-a-thon game.
The more people I ruled, the more my score went up. I always built a Temple in new cities. Of course most of the new cities were founded by me, since I razed most all enemy cities.

There's definitely a link there somewhere - I built temples in all the captured cities - only a handful because of the STUPID culture flipping - and in all the new cities I had to build because of the STUPID culture flipping and my score went up immediately.

This has to be checked out.
You mean Sid intended to discourage conquest, but the game rewards genocide?

No, I mean the more cities you have or capture, the harder it is to get a high score, or maintain a high culture or science rate.
Why is your post ticking?

Did your score increase solely due to building a temple, or due to razing a city and replacing it with one of your own?
It ticks because someone thinks it is only a matter of time before I join the dark side. I assume.

Well the civ I destroyed was the top civ so I was watching the score closely. To my surprise my ranking went down the more I conquered and razed cities. It went down even more when I built replacement cities, as did my science rate. So as an experiment I rush built temples and my score and culture immediately spiked. It seemed to have no effect on science though. I suspect if I rush built libraries my science would spike - but the averaging still hurts you.

Humm. I didn't notice similar results.
I started as near the smallest. I chewed through the biggest, then the next biggest, then the next. My score never stopped going up.

Other factors could be at play. Its was my plummeting science rate I noticed first. This is in the end game btw, 20th Century.

I noticed that my score went down when war weariness kicked in. Well, not down maybe, but the histograph kicked left a little. It makes perfect sense because the score is based on happy and content people. Unhappy ones don't count.

Ahem, to continue after that rather rude service interuption...
I chewed on the 2nd and 3rd biggest from about 1898 though 2038.
My score never stopped going up.
I was Communist (started revolution the turn after war broke out). Maybe that had an effect in light of Ironikinit's observation.

horse, i dont remember ever seeing my score going down, but i think the score takes into account your entire history. e.g. if you eliminated everyone in the last 100 years while in the entire history you were 4th or 5th you might not have the biggest scrore.

You could be right Mark - a very good point
I was one of the middle ranking civs for most of the game
On the other hand - if you look at the culture screen it assigns a culture value for each city. If you get a lot of small cities added to your civ it might affect your score in aggregate.

I think Mark has it.
I think the score is averaged. ie gain 10000000 pop this turn, big deal, what did you have for the last 100?
But keep the 10000000 people and the average goes up and up and up.
BTW, Horsie, did it used to be UberKruX?
