Hmmm, that's strange...when i right-click it and choose "save target as", i get the option to save as a gif...anyways, you have PSP7, right? You should be able to do it in there...here's how i do it. Under the colors menu, you should have the option to "set palette transparency". You can use that to set it so that the background is transparent. Hope that helps.

FMK, try right-clicking on Ixnay's image and selecting 'save as'.
That saves it as a .gif for me, so it might for you as well.
Or it might not, depending on your software, etc.
But worth a try

mine doesn't let me do that it only allows to save as a .bmp, but in psp7, i can save as a .gif and you can change the transparency with psp too

WTF????
Okay I have tried and tried this. To no avail.
This is in PSP...
I took an image. Copied it (Cntrl+C).
Opened new image (set background to transparency)
Pasted image to new one. (tried BOTH Shift+Cntrl+E, and Cntrl+E)
Used the eraser to remove background, this reveals a grey and white checkerboard transparency pattern. (things going okay)
Save it as a gif.
Re-open it to find the checkerboard pattern has been replaced with a white background. Every time.
What in the world am I doing wrong? It is fine for you guys to do it for me, but I want to know how to do it for myself.

Don't. You have to use the export to gif function. Under "File". Then save that, with the existing transparency to get it to work

No Dice
Doing that gets me this...
I set the transparency to the 'existing image or layer transparency.'
It then filled in the background colour to this red here... which interestingly is the same colour listed if you were to chose the transparency to 'match this colour' in the menu.

Wierd... it seems to have worked when I posted it, however the image looks nothing like that when viewing it with PSP. Odd indeed. It seems to be fine when loaded to 'Poly. Hmmm. Thanks Womby

Very strange... Are you using the wizard or the normal option tabs? The wizard is a lot easier, and doesn't seem to miss anything out if you just want a basic transparency.

I have tried every option! One time it came up with an aweful red background like I mentioned before...and upon uploading it, the red was still there (different image). I then tried a bunch of attempts with the avatar you see now.... (soviet sniper).
The version was horribly corrupted in this process of making it transparent. I dont know why? I will post the original unit here, and you can gague it against my avatar. It might not be noticable at first, but you will indeed see the difference when you zoom in... helmet, rubble area, rifle stock etc... lots of colours that shouldn't be there.
I have done every option each time, making several versions of everything in every imaginable way. I dont know, it acts differently each time. Grrr.

Oh damn , I just realised. It doesn't alter the one in PSP, that is still the nasty red one. It saves a copy of the file, with the transparency. Open that version in PSP to see it properly.
The image corruption is GIF compression. Pity you cant have transparent JPEGs really. As long as it looks alrigth as an avatar, its ok.

Hmmm. When I use the eraser I sometimes got the red background and sometimes the checkerboard. After saving I always reloaded the image to see what happened. Any of these who's transparency has 'worked' appears to have the red background in it when re-viewing in PSP.
Gif compression eh? Hmm again. I always thought gifs were the best cause there was no compression corruption? Does it merely happen when doing transparent images?
My PSP has no manual and I find it to be an awfully difficult program to use w/o it. Sometimes when I am trying to draw a one pixel line, it will affect 2 or 3 pixels in every direction:
Example of drawing a red line on white background. Sometimes it will work and I get a singular red line, other times it is a line of lighter-than-supposed-to-be red, with pink squares all along either side. As if it is trying to auto-blend the two together.
So therefore I often use a combo of PSP and M$Paint... which probably causes more problems then it solves.

Do a Google search on "PSP (or Paintshop) tutorials" and you'll be an expert in no time. That's how I found my way around a lot of progs

Could you resize this? Make it only a face shot if necessary.

I can't get to the .gif from that link; looks like they've disabled hotlinking. to get it to work, you'll need to right-click it, save it as a gif on your computer, and then upload it to apolyton as your avatar.

damn I really want a pipboy picture for my avatar.
I tried doing this a few months back with no luck
I have photodeluxe and for some reason it increases the file size. I can't get it below 10,000.
If it was a bmp file I could use MS Paint. That keeps files fairly small.
Here's the only decent color picture I have found so far.
I would like to get rid of the No obviously. maybe replace it with a human skull.
Can anyone help?

pain in the ass. I was able to get it down to this using MS Paint, but Apolyton doesn't accept bitmap files. Doh!
anyways it looks too small and distorted (I had to shrink it less than 80 X 80 and get it less than 10,000 kb). I don't know how you guys keep your avatars looking so good.

Doh! I forgot it doesn't display bitmaps. What does Apolyton have against bitmaps?
