Well, it seems pretty much that the entire end game for SP games is just out of whack. I mean you can slow down the research but you're still raking in tons of cash. I don't like how minerals become so trivial in the end game. With more turns between advances you're going to accumulate even more money. So, reducing the overall energy seems to be what should be done. I still think the game can be improved considerably by modifying alphax.txt but how... redo the tech tree (especially at the high end), perhaps remove some facilities, SPs?
