Getting Lost
The units which wander for millennia should not automatically send back their maps to their
cities, they should, only be able to see the land immediatley around themselves and, once reaching
5 squares of a city of their civ or allies, all of their progress in the world would be revealed.

After the discovery of the Modern age, however this would be outdated.

That is a good idea.

My only question is how to do that? You have to direct the unit and because of that you are going to know where the unit is travelling. Even if the only the squares around the unit where revealed you would still be able to remember that mountain range exists to the north or a river to the south.

Don't get me wrong. It's a good idea because it is very realistic.

There is another drawback to the idea - the game might not be able to cope because it would have to cope with remembering all the places the unit/s have moved in its past turns...

No, in Australia we don't live with kangaroos and koalas in our backyards... Despite any stupid advertisments you may see to the contrary... (And no, koalas don't usually speak!)
