It was fun. Still trying to figure out why we can't connect to each others machine.
All my starts were a little slow. Thanks SF for the restart on the very first one. It was one of those nights.
I was just starting to get back into that game when we stopped. (I know, everyone says that)
RAH
I really just posted to get the hotw threads off the top for a sec.
All OF THEM.

HAH, I just teched our AT&T tech site and the following was listed.
Can anyone see my computer in the Network Neighborhood?
No, because AT&T Broadband filters the File and Print Sharing protocol (NetBIOS) at the modem, your machine will not be visible others on the network. Nor will others be visible to you.
So it's in the damn modem setup. I guess I'll have to call tech support and ask them if there's a way to shut it off. I'll also ask the network gurus here. Then may be familiar with it, since half of them our customers also.

Damn, our local experts say it's hard coded in the modem and we're SOL. (why do I find that hard to believe.) So I guess I'll have to spend 10 hours talking to tech support. (their on-line chat expert was useless) It may require me buying a different modem.

That happened to a macintosh freind of mine when his cable provider(Shaw in Alberta) introduced their own local firewall.I could only hot join his hosted games for awhile but they closed that up shortly thereafter. The only way he can play online now is thru GameRanger(mac equivalent to The Zone).
kinda funny if you had to use The Zone ....lots of fun.

THE ZONE, I'll play civIII first. (Just Kidding about playing civIII)
The boys did a little research, my in-house experts anyway. Yes the modem is hard coded. They are researching alternate modems for me. But catch-22, I can't get one on their approved list because they all block it. So I have to get an unapproved one they won't support.
We'll see how that works. We aren't sure if just one of us would have to do it or both.
Yes, we can play each other, only if someone else hosts.
A little more research is required.

Good
And if you were wondering about the test thread... It seemed like "somebody" was updating the admin controls at the time, and I had lost the ability to close/delete threads
But the problem was solved quickly

FRI
Look for me on ICQ tonight. I'll be the one who looks like fresh meat. The wife is out of town and the beer is in the fridge. Unless the creek rises I should be available.

Considering my total lack of trade specials for most of the game, I was pleased with how I did, especially after messing up and forgetting to change to HG and buying up collosus.
I think the next turn would have given me 21 or 22 cities. Gunpowder was two turns away.
ANYBODY gonna be around tonight.

I will... but as usual, probably not available until 9:30 or 10:30 central time... so If anybody can't make the early game with rah, please post when you will be available... I NEED to play, and the thought of having to play Civ III in SP mode doesn't really interest me...

Yep, I saw the disaster.
Fortunately I only saw parts. (which was quite enough) Congrats to the sulukis.
RAH
BB, I know berz is playing in the sat diplo game so I assume we'll be starting another one. *sigh* that game would have been just fine for continueing.

LOL, been there, done that. (usually after a FEW beers)
At least you didn't forgot to change which wonder you were building after buying up and build collosus instead of HG. LIKE SOME OF US DID. I was shocked that I still got HG later, but I had to sweat it out.
NOTE: while granted, your last two games were better and showed definite improvement, they were both far short of the runaway leader. MOI

the only reason i don't forget to change wonders is that i tend to stockpile caravans
as for your running away abilities:
[gameleague mode]
the only way you win is that you're a big cheater, and you smell bad and have a bad haircut. and besides you can only win on your specialized settings and using rah rules all this is baseless of course but since i can't match your skill i have to attack you in order to improve my own sense of self-worth you big cheater, since there is no way a person of my supremely awesome skills can possibly lose to anyone
[/gameleague mode]
since i seem to be doing much better against barbs, and expanding fairly well, i have to figure out how to celebrate WLTLD (in deity) and get HG

That is one of the nice things about this group... when the game is over, the accusations don't start
I can't remember a "you cheater" flame war with this bunch

ROTFLMAO
Setting up IP games threads have avoided most of this type of baseless accusations in the past I HOPE YOU HAVE SOME SAVES THAT CAN BE SENT TO EYES TO JUSTIFY THOSE ACCUSATIONS. Otherwise post this Cr** in a thread with a more approriate title, Like "SINCE I CAN"T WIN, RAH must CHEAT and I feel the need to act like a 2 year old"
[/gameleague mode] I guess I really can't use this, since I never played in gameleague
However, there is some truth to your settings comments. I prefer them and have adjusted my stratagies to take advantage of them. I sometimes expend too many resources on defense so I like settings that entail risk if you don't. I don't do as well in 1x1x games or those less than deity. (usually because I'm so hammered that I forget the differences and end up building temples way too early or drop that city on a mountain without adaquate food resources nearby) I'm sure I could readjust but what the hey. Having them called RAH rules doesn't help either
Back to serious, There are ways to celebrate without happy wonders. (granted they make it a lot easier and more successful)
You can use the even-odd pop count method that Berz uses quite successfully. Or extensive trade routes with markets and sometimes banks like Markus does. Or you can say the heck with it and build pyramids early and race towards SOL and Communism.
Practicing the different methods is critical in MP since you're not always guarenteed the easy path. (No S**T sherlock)
Very early in MP, I never took advantage of the rapid growth as much as I should have. I practiced by playing MP 2x1x games with myself being the only human. I'd play to the beginning of AD and start over and do it again and again and again. You can do this quite a few times in one evening. I started to set goals for myself to guage my improvement. It was quite helpful. I finally got the hang of celebrating, with or without the wonders.
RAH
Practice does help.

That's why I'm hoping to join in. (Sorry I couldn't make it Saturday, Ming. Family was in bed by 9:30 but I fell asleep on the couch )
In the meantime, I've started the campaign for a DSL line. Wish me luck with the wife...

JR...
You should really try what Rah suggests...
Play some practice games with Rah rules settings by yourself against the computer.
Granted... the AI can still bribe your cities... but it usually doesn't happen before AD...
Just play a bunch of games until that point... focusing on expanding your empire and population as fast as possible.
And good luck on DSL... but what about cable...

Celebrating...
RAH -- although this might properly belong on the Strategy forum, maybe you could enlighten me on the following statement you made...
----------------
Back to serious, There are ways to celebrate without happy wonders. You can use the even-odd pop count method that Berz uses quite successfully.
----------------
(Sorry but I don't know the Quoting function in vB. I'm an idiot.)
Celebrating without HG is a mystery to newbies like me...
I've only achieved HG a couple times, and also suspect I'm not getting full benefit of my WLTxD when it happens. How explosive is the growth? I really don't see so much that it seems like a big deal...
I seek enlightenment at the feet of the massa...
