I alway's thought we would get Dinosaur's this Winter, and Civ3 next winter. So they can concentrate on getting one product at a time out the door, plus hit the end of year sales boom.
As I remember it from previous posts, Civ3 prototyping was started this time last year. That would give it a 2 year design cycle, and so would have to have a major re-design to slip into 2002.

Will the preview site be up anytime soon? I'm going crazy waiting for a screenshot or two....
And Civvers can't live without their scenario editors.

This is very welcome news indeed. There has been a serious shortage of info on civ3 lately. It would be nice if we were given something to whet our apetites.

The address doesn't have the ending full-stop, ie it's www.firaxis.com/civ3.
So much for "Firaxis Web Wizard", but we'll forgive him this time, eh guys?

I have pretty much given up on this game - I only come here now out of morbid curiosity.

Thanx, Ultrasonix, I was beginning to wonder if they had shut it down in preparation for a revamp.

I think the suspense of waiting for the new site now that we KNOW it's coming is actually worse then not hearing anything.
Not that I'm complaining mind you.

Last Updated February 10, 2000? What good is that? How are we meant to get excited when Firaxis give out data that is six months old?
Still, YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!

No, this is a misunderstand: actually you can see the old Civ3 FAQ, while Firaxis is announcing it will Very Soon be replaced by a proper dedicated site area.
I hope they will update info, too!

OK, I've tried to hold this off, but it's been 2 weeks +4 hours since the original announcement, and nothing's happened. What's going on?

Maybe he meant "very soon" by Civ standards: 1 turn = 1 year

The following what was posted at gamecenter.com and perhaps the source of the 2002 'rumour'.
quote:
What We Want to See: Civilization III
Hasbro Interactive announced Civilization III with great fanfare at last year's E3. Unfortunately, that was probably a bit premature. Civ
III is going to happen; however, it's a safe bet that the project won't see the light of day until 2002. One problem is that Firaxis is
committed to developing its dinosaur game for EA before it can fully concentrate on Civ III. The other, much larger issue is the mass
defection of talent--including Civilization II and Alpha Centauri designer Brian Reynolds--to Big Huge Games. The good news is that,
with Reynolds's departure, Sid Meier is actually going to design Civ III. The bad news: we're gonna be waiting a long, long time.

That quote IS the source of the 2002 rumour - I started it and linked to it from a few threads.
It's a little bit ironic how "A quick CivIII bit to put your minds at ease" and actually made us all more restless, eh?

Well, when you're a game designer working on a project that takes multiple years then `Real Soon Now' IS several weeks or a month.
On the otherhand, when you're an overly eager fan then `Real Soon Now' is about fifteen minutes. TOPS.
My bet would be that we'll see something in early to mid-October. Now, um... if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go check the Firaxis web-page again...

You will notice that Firaxis said "we never said the release date would be in 2002" he didn't indicate whether it would be 2001 or 2003.
Of course, he didn't deny 2002 either.

Hmmm, maybe the release of CTP2 will speed things up. If they keep delaying and CTP2 is any good at all, many civ 2 players will migrate across. I'm certainly going to buy CTP2 if the players' review are good.

Same here - the only reason I didn't get CTP was that the mags in general thought it wasn't very good.
edit: maybe those bunch of people left Firaxis, all the web-designers left as well - just a thought.

For those of you concerned about the site launch:
I'm sure you can all understand that there is a great deal of discussion and coordination that has to happen before we can open the site. There are a lot of people involved (including many folks from Hasbro) who are just making sure everything is copacetic before we go public with the site.
Please also keep in mind that as this will be a "preview site", we will be doing our best to address your questions and tell you what we can of the game, but it is not going to be the be-all, end-all of Civ sites by any means.
Just bear with us, the first step is always the hardest =)
As for this comment:

I think I can safely debunk that rumor =)
That's the Civ III team, picture taken yesterday...

Now can we all stop bashing Firaxis!
They are going to give us a great game. It is hard but we need to be patient (especially me!) It would be nice if they could snap their fingers and out popped a game but it doesn't work that way. (I sometimes wonder if Sid ever wishes he could make a game just by snapping his fingers!) It takes time.
I am very happy with Dan's latest update. I am extremely excited about the preview site and for civ3.
now if I could just find something to do while waiting for civ3...

Well, I hope our suggestions helped out with the design step... Can't wait until Civ3....
So, can you tell us if it uses a unit workshop model?
