Combat Blues
Right, In my current game I'm just having loads of fun seeing my Elite Legionaries ripped apart by the french regular Spearmen
When i go into Combat I consider several things
Unit Attack/defense Ratings
Unit Hit Points
Terrain
Walls/City size
Can someone enlighten me as to any further factors, I know there is a small element of Randomness, or perhaps a large element going on results so far.
My Elite 5/5 Legions (att=3) are currently losing to French Regular Spearmen (3/3) (def=2) in a size 7 city on grassland.
I expect the battles to be closely contended with the City, but when at best I'm taking ONE hitpoint it's getting me down a bit.
So, can anyone explain if there are more factors involved.
Thanks

Take a look at the editor under the General Settings. In a size 7 city, there's a number of defensive bonuses that come into play, not just the defensive rating of the units. Buildings and citizens also play a role.

According to http://www.columbia.edu/~sdc2002/civulator.html a strength 4 unit has a 46% chance of destroying a spearman fortified in a city on grassland.

Considering the Elite-Regular factor, the calc works my battle out at 67% chance of winning, guess i must just have had very bad luck in that game

Hang on, I screwed up. Legions have attack of 3, right?
OK, attack 3 elite; defense 2 regular fortified in a city (bigger than 6 is a city?) comes out to 67.9%, as Rothy said. I didn't push the button. Sorry.
