Cossacks - should I buy it?
A collegue showed it to me and it seems to be a great game. What do you think of it? It's RTS, does that make it uninteresting for old civ addicts like myself?

It's a neat idea for a game, and has some great concepts, but I don't feel an addiction, and it just doesn't make me want to play it.
The economy really kind of bogs you down, and the scenarios are downright sadistic. For the Caribbean one, I had to play through it a ton of times, and figure out EXACTLY everything I had to do to succeed.
The best parts were, the artillery can be stolen if you have no units around it, the resources like Iron and Coal are used up whenever you shoot(unfortunately, it also goes down just for having gunpowder units), and the mercenaries, really are mercenaries and unique to the regular units.

Age of Empires II would be the better choice.

I wouldn't recommend AOK, except for multiplayer games. The single player isn't very fun.
If you haven't done so yet, I suggest you check out Eropa Universalis. It goes from 1419-1819. It's realtime, but it's based on a board game, so it feels like a turn-based game going really fast. You, can, and I do, pause it very often to set up orders.

Simply put: The single player sucks donkey balls, the multiplayer is ace.

It takes far too long. You have to sit there for an hour on average building up a half-decent economy, before a couple of their mercenaries wander into your city and nick all your villagers.

Thanks for the replies, but could you please elaborate?
Paul,
I once played a game that took a lot of time. Its name is Civ2... That doesn't sound as something negative to me, on the contrary. And if the other nations' units walk right in, I'd say it must have been because you were weak on defense. Could also happen a lot in Civ2 before I grasped even the basics of the game.
C0ckney,
Why is singleplayer bad; a lousy AI?
DinoDoc,
Why would you choose AoE2 instead?
I also checked some reviews on the net. Not too praising... Maybe when it comes down in price?

Alright, I got bored of the game, because it's Command and Conquer, but on valium. The economy slows the game to a craaaaawl. Then there is the incredible difficulty of the single player game. I would try and borrow it from someone first to make sure you like it, or wait until it's cheap.

Carl, yeah the AI stinks in places, the fact on random maps you can't set teams so all the AI players are all against you, it takes forever and a day, it isn't hard, its just tedious.
But the multiplayer makes up for it IMO.
