workers leaving my country
I've being playing as france and am half way thru the game and most of my workers that have been automated are moving up the continent and into russian territory but they dont' seem to be doing anything while there is pollution and land to be cleared and mined in my own territory. Anyone know what they are doing and why??

Probably building a trade network of roads, but maybe they just got tired of your sissy booze and wanted to get plastered on some Vodka. If you have a trade network, you can trade luxuries for your people.

Use the pollution command (shift P) to dedicate workers to pollution. You can automate your workers in lots of ways (clear jungles only (shift J) to fit what you want to do. Check the manual (118?) for the list of commands.

There are a couple of reasons for this.

1: The russians have "split" your territory (IOW: the workers are going through the russians and into your other cities)

2: There is a river up there, and are making a irragation chain from the closest river, which is in russian territory.

I'd like to add an idea to the split thing:

If you have split land areas at the same continent, automated workers try to connect them by roads and railroads, even if that means that they build roads/RRs on another civ's territory.

The Vodka thing is also great!

My country wasn't split and there were already a half dozen roads connection me and the russians and my land had full irragition as well. The workers just seemed to move into russian plains and move around really not doing anything.

So, take them off automation, and bring them home. The automate worker algorithms can produce surrealistic results. When they do, get the workers, bring them home, and start them on something useful.

Maybe it was a "workers convention" - they were celebrating.

No, no, quite obviously they were getting advice on how to form a labour union.
