Need some Help with CIV2 Fantastic Worlds
I picked up the disk CIV2 FANTASTIC WORLDS and I have tried to install it and I get an error message telling me that I can't install it.

The book says you don't needing thing but CIV2 which I have and I am unable to get it (CIV2 FW) to load.

I am very interested in playing the scenarios and such on the disk...can anyone help me out?

which version of civ 2 do you have?

I can't imagine you would get any problems unless you have civ2 Multiplayer gold edition. That would most likely prevent you from installing fantastic worlds.

also I would recommend reinstalling civ2. Although that could be tedious if you have many save games, maps, scenarios and the hall of fame you want to save. You would have to remove all of those before deleting and reinstalling civ2. Use the original civ2 cd.

Also make sure you don't have any major mods in place. that may cause problems as well.

I have CIV2 version number Civ-II, V242a.

Nothing on it about multiplayers or anything like that.

The only mods I have made to it is using the extra units and adding back in Plumbing and removing the () that are around capitialization.

Beyond that, I have not added anything else but some extra city names.

Here is the error message I get when trying to install CIV2 FW:

Isinst30 has caused an error in _INS0433._MP.

Isinst30 will now close.

That is all it does, I get the picture up once the installer does it's bar up to 100 and I see the picture from of the cover of the book and the I get the above error message.

I will give your suggestion a try and reinstall CIV2 and see what happens.

well hopefully someone will come along with some ideas. This area isn't as populated as it once was.

I'm not really sure what to do now.

I have never had a problem. Although I have always installed conflicts in civilization before fantastic worlds. But I'm pretty sure that isn't required.

Start climbing, buddy.

You might try installing the "patch" that upgrades a copy of CivII to MGE. I don't have the link, but know it is available somewhere around here - or at civfanatics. Then you should be able to play the new scenarios. Somebody provided a link in the Democratic Games forum, under the thread titled "In the beginning..." I know it's a bit of a goose chase, but you may have success with that route...

Aside:
Try putting the () around Capitalization again. That won't solve this problem, but may prevent future problems during play.

How many extra units did you create? If I remember correctly, CiC only allows 3 extra, but FW 8. That could also be problematic.

If it still doesn't work, a few more details might help
What version of windows do you have
And what language do you use and your version of FW is

Okay, version of Windows is Windows ME. I am not sure which version of FW it is. I got it for like $5.

I have only added in the 3 units given in the game, extra land, sea and air. Nothing more.

The only things I have added in are Plumbing and removed the () from around Capitaliztion.

Even with a fresh install which puts the () back around Cap and removes Plumbing and the extra units, I still can not get FW to install or work. Each time I have tried I get the same error message as I posted below.

I played 2.42 for years until I learned of the 2.7.8 patch a few month ago. It installed with no problem right over 2.42 and was the coolest thing that ever happened in my CIV II playing days. I now have FW and can play/write REAL scenarios. Not to plug the competition on Apolyton's Forum but...it's at the Civ Fanatic's Site. (I like both sites - Apolyton is still better IMHO)

What should be best is to own or update to the MGE version.
It is everything FW has, including scenarios with some more cool stuff : gigamaps and especially of course hot seat and multiplay.
Just a stupid question, but have you tried to install on another computer, or another system than ME. It could be that the cd is corrupt

It's not a corrupt disk because I've got exactly the same problem with my ME system. I'm afraid it also seems to affect Conflicts (it has the same installer), so getting a copy of this would solve nothing.. I've not tried Eyn's Ctrl-Alt-Del and close everything except Explorer work-around (I'm at work) but I'll give it a shot tonight. If successful, I'll report back.

Eyn has it right - we had this problem a lot when W2000 came out and IIRC ME has the same snag.

Just to try and make the process as clear as possible - not suggesting Eyn that you did not do so -

Stop all 'obvious' programs: Outlook IE Word etc

Right click on any icons in the System Tray (the little area to the Right of the task bar) and choose the 'close' or 'exit' option if that exists - this should include such things as Virus checkers which will probably ask you several times if you are sure - you are!

Now press Ctrl - Alt - Del three keys simultaneously - the Task Manager will appear - Only Explorer and Systray are required - if there are any other items in the list - high light them and select 'End Task' - repeat until only Explorer and Systray are left - some of these damn things - in my experience the Lexmark printer apps are the worst - will take several attempts before they finally get the message and go away

You should now be able to install CiC and/or FW with no further problems (fingers crossed)

Good civin'

Thanks a bundle. You've made that dead clear. I'm looking forward a lot to getting back to Civ II

Edit: Back home, tried the fix. Problem solved. Thanks again.
