Fallout 1
Has anyone here played this game before? I've just picked up the game and have a few questions about it.

1) Where would I find the rope needed to get the rope required to get down the Vault 15 elevator shaft?
2) Which character would be the best for an RPG newbie to pick?
I'll probably think of more once I get further into the game.

jeez, I played this game all the way through like 2 or 3 times.
I just can't remember where the rope is. It's been too long since I played.
Vault 15? Is that the glow? You can buy ropes at various places I believe. But of course it's cheaper to find it.
Just be sure to check all lockers. The rope might not actually be at vault 15. It may be in another location. Sometimes I choose strong back so I can carry lots of sh!t. Always keep important things like lockpick sets, at least 1 rope, and keep 1 form of explosive.
As for the best character. They give you 3 to choose from. I personally like sniper type characters. It really pays to be a sharpshooter in fallout 1 and 2. You can modify the existing characters any way you like. I usually raise perception to 8 or 9. Sometimes 10. Keep your Intelligence high to get the most amount of skill points per level. Choose the finesse trait. You don't do as much damage, but you increase your chance of criticals. And then choose the improve chance of criticals perks.
If sharpshooting doesn't float your boat. You can also be a fast shooter. Set your agility to 10. And you can fire many weapons twice per round.
Or you can be a big bruiser character. Strength is obviously big there. I rarely play these guys, so I don't have much advice here. Keep agility high as well.
Or you can just be a talker type character. keep intelligence at 10. You can also bump up luck a little. You can actually win money at gambling.
Or a thief type character. Agility at 10. And make sure you tag lockpick, stealing etc.

Vault 15 is the first place you go to after leaving Shady Sands in your quest to find the water chip. I haven't heard of the glow, yet.

1) you'll need two ropes, iirc there's at least 2 in shady sands, which is halfway between the two vaults. i don't remember exactly where there are, but i think one is on a shelf/table/other container and another can be obtained by bartering with someone (i think by somebody standing near the main gates...)
2) personally, i created a character with high endurance, in order to get more hitpoints, as i knew they'd help keep me alive while get the **** shot of me.
save often
have fun

damn, i type slow
in F02, i've found a sharpshooting character to be very useful, especially aimed shots to the eyes. occasionally you'll be able to blind your enemy, causing them to run away. also you'll be able to knock them down sometimes too, giving them less time to shoot you

There are walkthroughs for that info you know. I konw that's not what you wanted to hear, but it's been to long for me to remember.
About best player; I'd go with the person with the highest charisma and intelligence that way you can talk your way out of situations, you'll get the most out of game this.

I have a good site for walkthoughs. hold on.
but please don't read ahead. Only use it when you get stuck. It's a pretty good story. And don't want to spoil the fun.

This is the actual site. FAQ's for many games. http://www.gamefaqs.com/
It says the rope is on the farm. Or you can barter for one. I'm not sure where the farm is. Somewhere around shady sands.
Damn, now I want to play

the best character?
the fun is, is that there isn't really a best character, but i would suugest a combat based one, but don't neglect your speech skills, or you may have to use your combat a bit too much.
Lemmy's ten commandments for Fallout
1. save often
2. try to be nice to people, don't insult them unnecessary
3. save often, especially before you go talk to someone important, or if you're not sure of their reaction towards you.
4. be carefull about who you kill, if you kill a citizen in another city, dont be surprised if everyone else there attacks you
5. save before you go to another city, you may get yourself killed while travelling
6. save before you go to an unexplored part of an city, you never know what enemies are there
7.think carefully before accepting certain missions, by accepting Some, you may not get a ch Ance to do others, which might be more Valuabl E to you.
8.you got 10 savegame slots, use them all
9. save before you try to steal from someone
10. did i mention to save often
oh , and made sure you got the latest patch, it speeds up save and load times, there are also a quick save and quickload keys, F5 and F6 i think, check the manual for that, they are really usefull.
*now let's hope he got the message*

I just played through this game this fall. I really like it. To get the rope, go to Shady Sands. When you get there, two people will greet you at the gate. The man has a rope to trade.
For what it's worth, I found a diplomatic character to be easier to play, you don't need a lot of strength and endurance until you're at least halfway through the game, and by then you should have great weapons, armor, and a few buddies helping you out. But having more question options at the beginning is a definite plus.

there is also a rope for free in the garden area of shady sands, it's in the southeast corner, there is a small house, in there is a sledgehammer and a rope.

don't forget dogmeat.
He's great. It's nice to have a dog following you around
He gets like 4 attacks per round. Which is nice. Especially in the early game where the enemies aren't too tough.
Later in the game it can sometimes be a pain to keep your npc's alive.
I think you have to wear a leather jacket to pick up dogmeat. But there is something else you can do. Some kind of quest or kill the dog's owner or something. I'm not sure.

to get dogmeat (spoiler):
dogmeat is that dog in junktown that keeps phil out of his house.
you can either kill the dog, or use an iguana-on-a-stick on him, he will then follow.
and i just leave them behind once i get the power armor and a turbo plasma rifle, who needs npc's if you can fire 5 times per turn

Rather then make a new thread, I'll just stick this in here...
I too have just started playing fallout recently, and have gotten a bit stuck aswell.
I've gotten a water-chip back to my vault, and now I am looking for the source of mutants... but I haven't had much luck finding any clues - just that mutants have been attacking caravans, and the mutant in the hub which talks about a mutant factory or something, but is unable to give me the location or any useful information regarding it. (In retrospect I wish I could of done that conversation over, though)
But I don't want any spoilers or walk-through type of information, just a point in the right direction.

It's been a while.
Have you already been to the glow? I'm sure you have to get the water chip.
What about the South East part of the map? There are a couple important areas there. And the most important area is the the northwest. that should be your last stop. :hint:
Hmm that may be backwards. The area in the southeast part of the map may be the last stop. I can't remember.

No, The only places which I know of and haven't explored much of are the glow (I have it on my map, but I don't recall hearing anything about it... so I haven't had a reason to go) and the brotherhood, who I've been to but didn't try to join, since I have no idea what they are about, either.
I've been thinking that the brother hood will be my next stop.

Oooh, Fallout. What a wonderful game. Perhaps the best game I've ever played.

Not a bad idea.
I wandered around the map just looking around for stuff. Reasons like that are why I love Fallout, just spent a lot of time exploring and searching around to find things .

one time I got stuck I just explored every single square on the map . I play fallout like civ2 or civ3. I can't stand having dark areas on a map. I have to know what's there.

Isnt revealing the whole map mandatory?
I have to do it just to try and get as many of the special encounters as possible.

Damn. Time for spoliers.
Well, I did make it to the military base, and was in the process of clearing it out when my save game decided to become corrupt ( Why do these things always happen to me? ) I assume that I was near the end of the game... so I won't bother starting over because I'm anxious to move on to fallout 2, anyways. But I'd still like to know the conclusion of the first - so feel free to post spoilers or give me a link.

let's se if i remember it right, after the military base you go to the Cathedral, which is somewhere south of LA Boneyard, there is a vault below with some super-mutants and the Master, once he's defeated the Cathedral self-destructs, or was that the military base?, not sure now...

I think you end up having to destroy both. and I believe you can do it in either order. I used to have a save game just before destruction. I always keep my save games as close as possible to winning the game. But I deleted all of my fallouts. My hard drive status has reached critical status. I only have about 300 megs left .
You only had 1 save game? Are your others corrupt? It's best to try to use all 10 slots for your save games on a rotating basis. Do that with fallout2.
Because it is worth seeing the ending. Not all of them are the same. Well the main ending is the same. but you can have different endings for different towns you have been to.

The sad thing about abandoning Fallout 1 is that you'll miss the ending -- not the shoot-'em-up in the Cathedral, but the finale when you return to Vault 13. It's the most bittersweet, meloncholy, pitch-perfect ending I've ever seen in a game (it borrows alot from the John Ford western, The Searchers, if that means anything to you). If there's some way to just play the finale movie off the disc, do it.
