I am cursed
I am cursed.

Whenever I play on regent level, I kick butt: it's almost to easy.

Whenever I play on monarch level, the AI kicks butt.

I am cursed. Whenever I play monarch, I'm decimated. Whenever I play regent, I clean up.

How do I get uncursed?

I think it's because Monarch is supposed to be harder than regent.

I think you're probably on to something there. Thanks for the tip.

What sort of playing style do you have? Since the AI gets such big production bonuses, cost decreases, and is so much more aggressive at that level you may find you do better by being more aggressive. At first you might consider playing with fewer civs, on a smaller map, with more contents (instead of pangea). This sound give you a chance to kill any civs who start on your home island and allow you to set up your own Fortress Maximus. As you imprive you can increase the map size and add more civs.

I always find Pangea easier. I guess it's because I don't want t be stuck somewhere with one or two missing resources.

How does it kick you ? With warriors ? With spaceships ? With cavalry who knocks off your spearmen and carries off your geishas ?

Some tips:
- the more civs you know the cheaper the cost of buying some old techs, so make a point of knowing them.
- buy some of the techs instead of trying to research them all.
- get a Horse resource and build a horsemen army to take cities instead of building them. The AI can build cities a lot faster than you do with the production advantage so there are plenty of cities around for you to take.
- if an AI asks for something small, just swallow your pride and give it to them since, most of the time (unless the AI engine/god itself misjudges the balance between you and the AI) it is just a hint that you should not be arrogant all the time and should give little things away to avoid your own destruction. If it asks for something outrageous, again, it would be a hint that you should refuse and whup its *ss instead when it declares war (as it inevitably will).

I agree with playing a little more aggressively on monarch. I find that if you try to play nice with the computer it will bury you. You must build up a decent army fast as well as build more cities in the beginning just to stand a chance at making it out of the ancient age.
