River Travel
Wouldn't it be a great idea to have units which can travel on rivers and in shallow water, like polynesian tribal canoes and modern hovercraft.

This should be in Civ. But only canoe units and smaller ships such as Trimes should be allowed to do so.
This brings up a point, should the settlers be able to build Panama Canals and such things as that?

You are right about the limitation to small boats such as triremes, and i think it is a gr8 idea of yours to build canals and such things, as this has been historically done in times as early as that of the ancient Greeks

Maybe, they could include the width of the rivers. That way some ships can travel a certain distance up some rivers, and other ships even farther up those rivers. That way you can show the panama canal as it is today: Most ships are too big for it and still have to sail around the tip of South America to get to the other side.

In civ2 MPGE you can build "canals" by building a city on a square bordereded by 2+ bodies of wter. Boats pass through the city.
This should be easier in Civ3

I like this idea. And about 'panama canals', I think that is a great idea too. You should also be able to build bridges across small bodies of water.

In fact, the Chinese were great canal builders in ancient times. I have their Grand Canal - name for the entire network - as a wonder to go with Canal Building (prereqs: Irrigation, Seafaring; leading to Sanitation) in my Technology Tree.
