Simultaneous Turns
I have long suggested simultaneous turns for Civ 3 like Imperialism if multiplayer is going to be usable.

And now I find that some of us here at Apolyton have found out how to make simultaneous turn games with (PC version only) MGE and ToT!!

FIRAXIS: now that means ya gotta put it in if the feature has been in development that long, besides in the only way to make large multiplayer games fun.

Sounds good, but to be sure, how does it work the Imperialism simultaneous turn model?

(And no, I haven't ToT nor MGE at hand, sorry )

Thank you in advance.

Umm Imperialism? It has a turn based model where everybody submits moves at the same time and they're all processed at the same time. I somehow doubt that this could work for Civ.

Why not? I always thought that would be a great way of doing it; sure beats the "everyone in the world moves before you" system.

It would be simple. There's the input phase. Each player looks over his cities, changes build queues, deals with science, taxes, and happiness. They also move their units and initiate diplomatic negotiations. Then when everyone hits end, the output phase begins.

All the units move at the same time. The units with the greatest movement rates go first, because they're faster. There may be problems with ZOC, but I never really thought that made sense anyway (how could a phalanx assert control over an area of 900 square miles?). Diplomatic negotiations would then be handled, based on embassy proximity or some other factor.

There's plenty of games that use Simultaneous Turns quite effectively, and there's no reason that immediately springs to mind why Civ 3 couldn't either. I'm not saying it's the best thing for the game, but it's certainly possible.

Mind you, I would suspect the decision on whether to use it or not has already been made.

I had very few complaints with SMAC simultaneous mode. It is entirely possible to do, and do well. I just can't stand the wait between turns in a game with more than 2 or 3 players. Especially playing over a LAN, where you can actually lean over and verbally abuse someone if they're taking too long.
