Spankings
I was wondering, what with the recurring debate about the role of spankings in child-rearing, what ya'll used to discipline your kids.

I don't have kids.
I'm generally against spanking.
But I assume I'll have to use it if I won't be able to educate my kid properly.
But it'll be something ver drastic.
I almost never got spanked.

It vaguely ties in with "I was never spanked as a child and do not think I was worse off for it", as well as "I have seen my nephews and nieces brought up in a rational, non-denouncing manner and they're much better-behaved and sweet than kids that are constantly admonished by their parents".

I was spanked as a child and see no problems with parents disciplining thier children in that manner as long as they don't cross the line into abuse.

I agree 100% with Alexander's Horse: my 3 children pay very good attention to Mr. Spanking Hand, and mind him much better than when I say "Please", or "Stop That!" ! Works quite well with the wife, too, now that I think about it!

Horse asks Dominic (3) to get out of the empty bath 4 times whilst Horse stands there with a towel.
Horse smacks Dominic once on the leg. Dominic gets out of the bath immediately (i.e. before fatherly message number 2 is launched).
Dominic howls and says, "I'm not your friend any more".
Horse says, "That's good, because I'm not your friend any more either."

Using physical violence to discipline your children is wrong. I do not care for those adults who have grown up and said they are angels today because they were spanked.
Maybe such widespread physical violence against children led to an increase in violent crimes committed by those same children or teenagers.
Physical violence is wrong, period.

Why is spanking wrong? Proper use of it is a more than effective means to discipline a child.

They amount to as much evidence as unsupported assertion linking criminal activity to being spanked as a child.

Bullsh*t.
I would argue that the reason there is a rise in violent crimes is because of a lack of parental discipline when young. A lot these hoodlums just need a good belting - and when I catch one of these kids at it I'm always happy to administer it to them myself - no need to call the police. A clip over the ears from a concerned citizen at an early age goes a long way.

I'd say the exact opposite. Most criminals are brought up the old way.

Children usually learn from their parents how to function in society.
When parents teach their children that physical violence is okay through spanking, then it's not surprising that violent crime has risen among teenagers.

Crap. You know nothing about kids, do you.
You would have benefited from a few beatings - which you obviously didn't get. More is the pity.

Don't bother with personal insults--I won't play that game here.
You don't think that children learn behavior from their parents then??

Okay Einstein. Explain why youth violence exploded precisely when parents started following trendy theories in the sixties about not physically disciplining their children.
Your "all violence is bad" line was a slogan of that period.
There is a world of difference between smacking a child and mugging a pensioner.
