Frustration due to early conquer...
is it just me or is everyone having the same problem? I've never played Civ 1 or 2 b4 but in Civ3, if u successfully conquer a civ early on in the game, instead of wiping them off the face of earth, they appear again with a brand new city in another place...

e.g. i was playing the Martha world map and I'm starting in France. The Germans were starting in Italy, and then when i conquer them, they started again in the next round in CHINA, which means they have ROOM to expand AND CONTROL ALL THE SILK OF THE WORLD!

is this normal? what's the explanation?

Well, I have also played Martha's world map, and this happened to me when invading France and Greece (RL starting locations). This is my theory:

They send out settlers.

Now, sure, it seems weird that they might get these new cities at the most opportune times, but I found it strange that when i finnished off the main cities of France, its new capital (and only city) was in the middle of absolute nowhere. No pleasant land in sight. To be accurate, it was on the other side of Russia, a little east of Siberia. Perhaps the settler was headed for pacific coasts, and upon the utter defeat of his country, just settles wherever he is that turn? thats my theory.

not possible...
well it's not possible for a settler to go all the way from Italy to China... i surrounded them early on and they are cornered on the pennisula..

i also used the cheat so I KNOW for a fact that they don't have any settlers n e where///

I used a cheat save name that allowed me to see the whole map and the game does relocate a civ that has been killed off early in the game. I noted that Egypt was distroyed completly and were relocated and given free units to defend its newly established city.

this also happened in civ 2.
there was an option to turn off "restart eliminated civs". it would only restart civs that got wiped out early on. it is definitely there on purpose, but i am not sure of the exact reasoning behind it. possibly to add more challenge?

I don't know if civ 3 has an option to turn that off though.

It' just an extended version of the restart-feature of civ2
While in civ2 a wiped out civilization got one settler at the northern or southern edge of the map, Civ3 gives to them a complete new city, with some units.
So in civ3 a restarted civ has a bigger chance of recovering.

And no, in different from civ2 there is (yet) no option to turn this feature of...

That's always been a feature of Civ games, since the first one came out. In the early part of a game, any civ that gets destroyed will reappear somewhere else. It used to be that it would resurrect itself as some other civ, but for Civ III, it always revives as the same one. I'm not sure when this shuts off in the game, though it will eventually.

It hink it makes sence, there are always a few remnents of civs (like a sheep hearder that got lost) after destruction. AND I find even 16 civs to few.

In fact, they will restart with 2 settlers, about 4 warriors and a worker.

Since I 'cheat' a little to get myself a nice corner of the world by having a scout with 99 movement and load option (load in my other units, go the the place I want, unload them and disband the scout never to build one again) I sometimes need to destroy a civ to get myself some room.

This civ is then restarted with a clear advantage over the rest.

But if you don't 'cheat', the restarting is not much of a problem, since they will now probably restart at a disadvantage.

Well, i don't know anything about restarting enemy civs, but I have one last reply (i hope) to Spicy Timothy?

Did you surround the peninsula by the sea as well? On Martha's world map, some civs get VERY early access to sea units.

not true
Ninot: They don't have n e cities that's next to shoreline and sea travel is not known to the world at the time.

godinex: We don't even hv the little boat, i don't think galleries are possible...

also, someone said that the relocated civ has a disadvantage, that's actually not true. in my example, they go on the control all the silk in China and their land mass expands so much: west to India to east to Canada! they r now the most powerful in the world... all becoz of a silly mistake...
