Ok the fixes were made, and I've uploaded the new file:

http://darthveda.tripod.com/kujitsu.html

Whoever playtests this thing, I'm specifically interested in when Chinese cities are taken by the player to guage how easy/tough the China campaign is.

Here's a peak at the P-38 I updated. I'm still not entirely satisfied and will probably work on it some more. To the left is the nemo unit I found a little lacking for my needs.

Hail the Conquering Japanese!

The great Imperial Army of Japan announces that it has fought back communist insurgents around Taiyuan and has pressed on against the forces of the KMT. Six infantry batallions and two batallions of artillery have carried the fight from the Yellow River closer to the goal of Sian.

From the South the second spring of the offensive prepares to strike from Loyang. The army has readied eight infantry batallions, three mechanized batallions, and five artillery batallions.

With the Air Force clearing the way, Sian should not last much longer than six months.

Wary news comes from Japan though, with fuel supplies running low, military analysts are guessing that only two years worth of fuel remains in the stockpiles. The military can give no assurances on securing a new supply and has looked to the foreign ministry to once again obtain more western supplies.

In other news the Asama Maru has successfully docked at Kobe without incident. It has offloaded it's German advisers who will be put to good use in the coming months.

And in other news, Kyokujitsu part eight is ready for human consumption (I'll keep working instead of releasing it though).

About how long does it take you to write a single event?

And although you've probably fielded this question before... why do you need so many event files for a ToT scenario? They give you a lot of space as is...

I break it into so many events files so I can keep the game objective-focused and so that I won't have to say "ok, I ran out of space... now I have to break it down more."

As for building an events file, once I got off my lazy ass, this one only took me about two or three days. One for research and drawing the Asama Maru, another for building the event, and another for debugging.

Also I'm working the whole time to rework earlier events files that have a few legacy bugs that I run across. (If I screw up earlier on, I have more events files to change). For example, I have to go through right now and change about 5 events files because I incorrectly designed an event.

Imperial Army Suffers Grave Defeat at Tungkuan!

Military Planners and Generals were humiliated and defeated by their gross arrogance and incompetance over the last few months. After great progress in capturing Yenan with minimum casualties, Imperial Army pressed on towards victory in Tungkuan.

While Northern commanders were having an easy time cleaning up and destroying whole Chinese divisions on the route to Sian, the South found machinegun nest after machinegun nest. After three long months of slugging their way West and South, both armies met at the outskirts of Tungkuan, the key to Sian.

The battle began with a fierce pounding from Artillery regiments and continued on for a week with Infantry assault after Infantry assault. Finally the Imperial Japanese Air Force arrived to lend help to the battle but despite their furious bombardment. It seemed that the Chinese had no limit to the men they were willing to sacrifice to hold on to Tungkuan.

Finally, Japanese reinforcements gave out and the defenders had to prepare for the inevitable Chinese counter-attack. Generals and commanders returned a few days later with no surviving units from their regiments. It's estimated that almost four Japanese divisions were wiped out in combat during the last week of June.

Four regiments are all that remain of the Northern attack force, and they will need vigilant cover from the Air Force in the coming month if they are to escape with their lives. Plans for the evacuation of Yenan are planned with a regroup at Taiyuan and Loyang.

Japanese transports are bringing up reinforcements as quickly as possible but it will be a strugle to re-establish the lines with such a loss of Japanese manpower at the front.

Other Fronts Bring Better News

Japanese Patrol Boats were able to squash and surpress several communist and nationalist regiments making their way towards the strategic centers of Wuhan and Nanking.

In the Manchuko theater, a communist uprising was surpressed within a week, with more than three communist divisions destroyed. In the midst of communist camps, High Command was able to extract a treasure trove of fuel and ammunition. The supplies were taken to Tsinan to help relieve the fuel shortage on the front lines.

On the homefront, German advisers have recently upscaled Japanese factories so that enough armored units can be constructed to begin constructing whole regiments of tanks trained in armored warfare.

Communist Uprising Expected

Noting the upsurge of communist activity in the North, High command is bracing for an attack there, diverting planes, armored vehicles, and personnel to put down any peasant uprisings there.

-=-=-=-=-=-

Part Nine is done. Stupid tungkuan, how dare they spoil my offensive by having a billion units in a city with 'walls'.

Filthy Communists Routed in Manchuria

Japanese field commanders and Air Force commanders rejoiced at the news that the entire Communist Eigth Army, which had infiltrated into Northern Manchuria, had been routed and was fleeing from battle. Since their offensive was launched, Japanese bombers flying from Mukden and Peking destroyed villages, troop concentrations, and dropped poison gas on suspected enemy strongholds. The effects were astounding, as an estimated 200,000 enemy are believed to be dead or incapacitated.

The largest-scale communist offensive of the war was brought to a quick conclusion after only two months of fighting. The cost to Japan was high though, with 20,000 casualties in the fighting, including an entire armored regiment, which was ambushed in the woods around Mukden.

The Fight will continue into the winter while the rest of Japanese forces in Manchuria clean up the withered and tired Communist forces. High command doubts that Communist leader Mao will try anything so foolish again.

Wuhan Artillery Regiment Decorated

The commander of the Wuhan defense artillery regiment was commended for his exemplary work over the past months in surpressing the enemy. His troops singlehandedly held off over 55,000 enemy troops trying to enter the city through the hills and mountains.

He commented that, "they kept using the same mountain passes and roads over and over again. We simply had to train our artillery on certain positions and keep spotters up front."

Loyang Stands Firm

Despite the total rout of forces in the area during the spring, forces in Loyang have regrouped and destroyed two persuing Chinese divisions. Generals in the area have rediscovered their determination and are prepared to take the fight back to the enemy when the spring thaw comes. The army has amassed several infantry regiments in the area in preparations for a counter-offensive to avenge the Tungkuan incident.

Operations in Southern China reach Standstill

Despite valiant efforts by the Imerial Navy Marines, no headway has been made in retaking Canton harbor after it was lost more than a year ago. Offensive operations continue out of Swatow, and the Marines have fought the Chinese to a standstill in the mountains and swamps in the area. The IJN has carried out routine bombardments of the coastline, catching random Chinese units unawares. The IJN carrier Akagi has also been spotted in the area, sortying the A5M fighter from its decks.

A squadron of A5M fighters proved themselves in August when returning from a strafing run on a Chinese infantry regiment. They were ambushed by a squadron of Soviet-built Polikarpov I-16 and fought with cunning and skill. In the end, the entire Chinese squadron found itself entirely outmatched by the skills of IJN pilots.

The IJA reported that its operations in Southern China, purely defensive in nature, met with strong success. Guerilla assault after assault on the cities of Nanking and Hangchow were easily repelled. Several thousand chinese warlord-equipped peasants were killed in these defensive actions, with four regiments of infantry routed in October alone.

Taiyuan Falls, Army Group Yellow Threatened

Will the fall of Taiyuan to enemy guerilla fighters and communist insurgents, Army Group Yellow, which has been making a steady retreat from the defeat at Tungkuan, has been bottled up at Yenan. Surrounded and outnumbered, they no doubt intend to defend to the last man and shell, and rightly so, as the army recently completed a large supply center in the area to fuel the aborted effort on Sian and Tungkuan. Fighting around Yenan is said to be fierce, but all hopes rest on the 25,000 fighting men inside the city. The army has said that it is organizing a force of two infantry regiments and an artillery regiment to retake Taiyuan and re-open lines of reinforcement and supply.

November 1940 - February 1941

Siege of Yenan Broken

Although there were 10,000 Japanese casualties defending the city through the winter months, they caused at least twice as many Chinese casualties. Generals were taking a grim view in January when the city was surrounded and hope looked far away. News from the Yellow River brought new life to the division protecting Yenan as Taiyuan was retaken by a division of brave soldiers of the Imperial Japanese Army.

Backed up by Army bombers and fighters, the defenders of Yenan made a fight of it and broke a hole in enemy lines that allowed them to withdraw to Taiyuan, and save over 15,000 Japanese lives.

The city of Yenan remains empty, but sources say that the cowardly Chinese, still broken from the fighting retreat of the Japanese army, has not yet mustered the strength to take the city back.

and secretly...

Generals Debate China-South Pacific Strategy

While more than enough soldiers exist on the Yellow River to defend from any Chinese incursions, Generals in Tokyo debate strategy. More reinforcements could be comitted to the battle, and a possibility of taking Sian exists. With three divisions ready in the South and three in the North, it's said that another two divisions to both front may be able to finally break the backs of the Chinese and break through to Sian.

However, as war with America seems more and more likely, opponents to this plan cite failures in earlier expeditions to produce results on this front. They also state that overcommiting on this front would severely reduce the ability to commit on other fronts in the coming year. In their opinion, it would take almost six to eight months to muster the strength needed to begin an offensive on the Yellow river to take Sian, what they call an "unacceptable misappropriation of military resources."

Proponents point to the newly completed Army Recruitment center, that it will be able to provide at least a division every few months, and that more than sufficient manpower exists to commit to the plan. More debate will have to be conducted before the army comes up with a definite plan for 1941.

and not-so-secretly...

Imperial Japanese Army on the Move

The Imperial Japanese Army, with assistance from Thailand, was able to snap up Cambodia and all of Southern Vietnam with exception of DaNang. The biggest windfall was in December 1940 when Saigon fell without resistance and Japanese soldiers marched on to DaNang. Some French soldiers decided to make a fight of it and were punished the next week by the Battleship Kongo and her escorts. DaNang was vacated by the cowardly French and the army is poised to take it in the first days of March.

Looking good DV! It seems that thread on whether Stalingrad or Kyokujitsu would be finished first galvanised you into getting down to it!

The gauntlet has been thrown in other words; can we expect a similar burst of activity from FMK on the Stalingrad front?

As a backup against all who would dare oppose Kyokujitsu, I have copied the entire 20.7MB .zip file to a CD for safe-keeping.

Yes, 20.7MB. Fear not though, as most of that is music files I may/may not release with the scenario.

Question:
Why not release the music files? Can't you get a website(s) to handle the storage? I mean, at least put it up for a little while so a site like Civfanatics can download everything and upload it themselves and host the scenario in its entirety.

Well I don't have 20.7 MB of hosting space available over the summer and I absolutely despise the idea of paying for online services. I might upload some parts for a bit before the actual release so places like Civfanatics can snatch it.

Why don't you just use something like a series of Geocites sites? I think that Geocites has a 20 Mb limit, so you'd need to have a couple of sites...

Large Contingent of Bombers Arrive in China, Drive Attacks Home on Chinese

250 new Ki-51 tactical bombers arrived in China this spring and immediately began hammering Chinese positions in and around Loyang, Tungkuan, and Yenan. They were joined by more than 150 Ki-43 Fighters and almost 100 Ki-21 bombers for one of the largest air strikes in the war's history.

Chinese lines, which had been creeping up on the Yellow river defenders, had finally started to eat away at the defenders in Loyang when the Air Force stepped in. The Air Force reported that it had successfully surpressed or destroyed over a dozen regiments. They also report one of the greatest air victories of the war courtesy of a singled squadron of Ki-43 fighters. The 18 fighters managed to single-handedly shoot down over 90 enemy I-16 aircraft. The Air Force is reportedly very happy with the new design, as it has proven itself repeatedly since it entered service last autumn.

Japanese Fleet Pulls up Moorings, Heads South and Home

Four Japanese fleets pulled anchor today from their berths in Formosa and Korea.

First fleet, consisting of the carriers Akagi, Kaga, Soryu, and Hiryu, with their escort of three battleships and almost a dozen other escorts, has sailed to the home isles to take on Aircraft.

Second fleet, with two light carriers, two battleships, a light cruiser, three destroyers and a submarine has set sail to Vietnam, escorting five entire army divisions.

Third fleet, with two light carriers, a battleship, two light cruisers and three destroyers set sail for Tinian escorting two regiments of marines.

Fourth fleet, consisting of two battleships and a destroyer have sailed to Marcus island escorting four regiments of marines.

Army occupies Vietnam; French Refuse to Surrender Hanoi

The army was displeased to learn this month that the French have refused to surrender control of Hanoi, and has promised to shell the city and occupy it by force next month if the forces inside do not capitulate. Last month, the French ambushed and captured a Japanese marine force outside of Haiphong harbor.

The army has landed three divisions in Vinh, North Vietnam to make good on their threats to attack Hanoi.

Navy G3M Bombers Hit Burma Road

The Navy was proud to announce this month that its bombers have struck the Burma road, and destroyed an entire convoy of weapons that were being sent to the Chinese by the British. The British diplomat in Tokyo has been warned that any further shipments along the road will also be attacked.

Armed Forces Begin Seizing Merchant Ships

The armed forces seized 40,000 tons of shipping from Japanese merchants in April and have promised to acquire more under wartime plans. The ships are being pressed into army and navy service as transports for military goods and soldiers.

The army and navy have stated that recent reinforcements to the South Pacific and Vietnam have severely tried their merchant fleets and are screaming for more to be acquired from civilians.

Here's a little infantryman I made for Thailand. I figured since the Thai's were on Japan's side they'd probably be using the same equipment and mostly uniforms. I couldn't find anything that referenced what types of uniforms they wore.

I just finished writing the second-largest events file of the game. Phew. I also spruced up Nemo's delapidated Zero. I lengthened the body, changed the engine and the cockpit, and I gave it some racing stripes

I'm currently working on the Ki-45 Toryu, which looked like a pile of crap.

Here's two before and after shots. I have to thank case for sprucing up my N1K in his Australia scenario. I went and gave it a new tail and fattened the fuselage a bit. I'm happy with the results. The Ki-45 could probably use a bit more work in the engines though, I'm not entirely satisfied yet.
