So what should Firaxis focus on now?
So what should Firaxis focus on now?
Here are my thoughts, in preference order.
Patching Civ3
I believe that this is a great game, the best Civ so far, and you all know how good Civ2 was. But I think that people forgot of how annoying Civ2 could sometimes be (ridiculous ZOC, AI founding "secret" size-1 cities inside your empire, 100+ civil disorder pop-ups, weak military AI, ...) and they should remember that when criticizing Civ3 in a non-constructive way (ie, not making suggestions or giving ideas).
So, I think that patching Civ3 to perfection is the path to follow, for it leads to an attainable goal.
The early game is excellent; if all the game could be as exciting, we'd end up with a legendary game on our hands.
MultiPlayer
I know most of you are eager for MP. No doubt that a human opponent is far more challenging that AI. IMHO, I just don't think the time is right for it yet; The game can and should be improved before allowing for such a demanding expansion. Soon enough, Firaxis would have to deal with different bugs and patches for both SP and MP. Let them concentrate resources on a problem at a time, because that will bring more efficient results.
I say: consolidate now - expand later (which doesn't mean I'm not eager for MP either).
Civilization 4
A few radical people are so annoyed with the basics in Civ3 that they've given up on it. And let's face it: many more patches will come, but the fundamentals will remain more or less the same. If you feel that Civ3 is hopeless and beyond any further tweaking, but still love the whole Civilization concept and want Firaxis to abandon Civ3 soon and focus on Civ4, this is the option for you.
other games
Vote for this one if you're absolutely fed up and have given up on the whole Civilization concept, want to see other games developed and only come to these forums to bash, rant and complaint in a non-constructive way (I think this option might gather a few votes... ).
...
Open option, elaborate below please.
Any thoughts?

Corruption and city capturing...
Screw that. They can do both. Civ3 is bringing in Enormous profits. Mplayer shouldnt be all that difficult!

Going directly to Civ4 would be the worst thing.
Why?
Look CTP.
It was buggy, and team decided insted of fixing it to make CTP2.
CTP2 was even more buggy then CTP, and was sold in 10 times less number of copies. And then Activision just quit.
Still CTP1 & CTP2 MODed are good games.
But,
only if MODed.

How about finding a new line of work for those who conceptualized Civ 3; a truly uninspiring piece of work it is!

Bah! CtP2 was a thousand times better than the first one! Still, not great, but better by far than the first.

re
My highest priority would be to set up Civ3 to add new civs in the same way SMAC added new factions...just add the civ to the pool of possible civs. Frustrating having to remove a civ to install a new one (keeping in mind the advisor-screen crash).

I want MP really bad but before you can run you must learn to walk. Right now Civ3 is still a little shacky on its feet so patching and balancing is what is needed.

A proper editor so I can fix things myself. But since this was no option I voted for patching civ3.

I just hope there will be a Civ 4. Civilization is a timeless concept. It was fun 10 years ago, it is fun now, and will be fun in the future. I'd like to see the game progress with new concepts, and smartter, better AI, Bigger maps, more units, improvemnets, advancements, wonders, etc.

I think Firaxis should focus on keepin SID focused, so that next time there's a game in development, it isn't left to flap in the wind.
Sid is a MASTERMIND when it comes to game design, but this game simply does not have his "stamp" which tells me he may have attended the meetings, but didn't do much in the way of leading or directing the project.
Understandable, if the greater portion of his attention was focused in on Sim Golf.

I hope Firaxis continues to patch Civ 3. With good feed-back, hopefully they can make it into a game we want to play.
However there was a rumor a few days ago that Firaxis had the rights to make an XCom sequal. If based on the first few XCom games, that could turn out to be an excellent game!!

CTP is a better game then Civ3. The Stacking combat features, Government option, easily modable Slic's...I could go on ; and stable Mplayer/PBEM platforms make up for the stupidity of an AI.
Ya there are bugs. But Activision did what they could.
CTP2. Now yes ; that was crap. The only good thing in that was the CD music.

Smac 2
If not,
CIV4 with more borrowed elements of SMAC and a revolutionary combat system

1. Patches (for many here that likes to play the regular game)
2. Scenarios and the full scenario editor (this is not "modding", so don't confuse the two)
3. Multiplayer (for some of my old friends who having been putting off playing Civ3)

I think Firaxis should finish the damned game.
And Call to Power 2 is better than Civ3. No question about it. And it pangs me to know say that.
