"Here's a vignette we're dying to see on the ABC broadcast of Sunday's Ford's Theatre Presidential Gala: When Stevie Wonder sat down at the keyboard center stage, President Bush in the front row got very excited. He smiled and started waving at Wonder, who understandably did not respond. After a moment Bush realized his mistake and slowly dropped the errant hand back to his lap. "I know I shouldn't have," a witness told us yesterday, 'but I started laughing.'" --Lloyd Grove, Washington Post, 03.06.02.

I really, really need a "collective embarassment" smily.
Stevie Wonder was one of the greatest stars of Black music in the sixties and seventies. He was also one of the greatest musicians, writing, producing and performing classic upon countless classic.
I can almost be you'll have heard at least half a dozen of his songs on the radio or elsewhere. "You Are the Sunshine of My Life"? "Superstition"? "Livin' For the City"? "Happy Birthday" (No, not that one, the MLK one)? "My Cherie Amour"? "Sir Duke"? "Uptight (Everything's Alright)"? Rather embarassingly "I just Called to Say I Love You"? Don't tell me you've never heard any of these songs.

::yawn::
I don't think this is a horrible faux pas. I can see many people making the same mistake before realizing what they were doing.
Though not as bad as Gore asking who George Washington and Thomas Jefferson were in Monticello.

Gore is an idiot, and would wave even more. He also inflates his image all the time, and that makes him an complete fool. Who would you rather have in office an idiot democrat or a funny republican?
Hey, Marcus get your trolls out of here...
Sure Bush was funny... and that is a very good quality. Only Reagan had that, and it seems Bush does too.

there's been a page with all this funny stuff in one of the magazines in one of the sunday's newspapers.
Charles de gaulle, margareth thatcher were there and many others...
I only remember de gaule's statement: "China is a very big place which is full of Chinese"
Precise and informative

Well, we've all done stupid things like that before.
It is just ammunition for the MarkL's and the other anti-Americans. Watch them bring it up in 2004.

It's not anti-american it's anti having a man who's not firing on all cylinders as head of state for the most powerful country in the known universe.

He probably forgot when he started to wave.
I've done stuff like that before, myself
