I hope the looks of these units will stay as good in smaller 3d-versions as they look here in 2d.
I agree with the comment on the rifleman. I bet he looks like Mel Gibson (in the movie "the Patriot") when he turns his head. The hat somehow looks too 18th-century alike. Here's an idea I got when reading the beginning of the thread were someone spoke about colonial troops. Maybe it's possible to make a difference between "home"- and "expeditionary"-troops, resp. in a kind of "union"like uniform, and I would like the "redcoat with whitehelmet" uniform.
Panzer (in dutch "pantser", though everybody here uses the word tank for a tank) means first and foremost (in dutch too) armour. In german the word panzer has become synonymous for (english)tank. The "official" designation for tank in german was/is Panzerkampfwagen ("armoured battlecar"), a lot of other armoured vehicles were given such functional names too, but they were never refered to as "panzer".
And I too don't like the ambulancelook of the tank.
And best wishes to everybody outhere for the new year

What a lot of over-reaction!
Take 3 ordinary pieces of art, add the words "Civilization III" and presto- hysteria!
Just to drive the point home, those pics could be in play, as long you don't mind displaying only a 10 by 6 tile portion of your map!
(The picture part of the phalanx is 65 pixels wide x 125 high, and the tank is 105 wide b 85 high.)

-Why can't they draw proper swastikas and not red crosses?
-Why is the phalanx wairing pyjamas and why is that face on his shield sticking his tongue out at me?
-Why has the Rifleman got frilly bits blocking his sight?

Why not the red, white, blue and orange circle ??
Why not the red star of the red army, the thing looks pretty much like a t-34 tank.
But certainly not swastikas, that's too much honour for those dammed nazi's (and it isn't historically correct either !!, german tanks had white/black crosses on them).
It'd better be something neutral, but not with red crosses, that gives a strange association for a tank.

I definetally agree that they should take the rifle out of that man's hands, give him a musket and call him a musketeer. I have no comment on the phalanx, and the tank needs to have the red cross removed (though not necessarily replaced by another insignia because then we would be favoring whoever used that insignia).
But we need to remember that these are only concept drawings and for a concept drawing I think they look pretty good.

I don't want to be negative because I loved Civ 1 and 2 and am really looking forward to Civ 3. But I don't much care for the Civ 3 units they've released so far. As far as pretty animated units go, I don't think they are nearly as attractive as, say, Age of Kings. But even more importantly, if they go this route, it will be impossible for any but experts to modify them.
Being able to change the units in Civ2 using a simple paint program was brilliant. I'm not an artist, but even I have spent hours tweaking my units -- downloading new ones from the hundreds available online, and modifying them. This is one reason why Civ 2 is still thriving, 5 years after release (what other game has been played so much so long?). It won't be possible for me (and many others) to do this in 3D, and certainly I can't begin to create animations.
Anyway, maybe I'm swimming against the tide, but I'd be perfectly happy if Civ 3 used Civ 2 graphics, and just deepened the AI, diplomacy, and rules. I know that's not the road they're taking, but I'd love to see a 2D option at least.

I was watching the different unit animations. Does this mean that there will be a battle screen since there is an animation for running, attacking and a victory and death? Or are these animations for the main map?
