So what do you think, yin?
Does this game have any hope whatsoever? Or will it be yet another imbalanced, tedious, nightmarish atrocity like the various other piles of slop that Sid and Friends have thusly churned forth?

Do you think Alpha Centauri is tedious, if so, how so?

Alpha Centauri was fun to play for a good, solid month. But in the end, I went back to Civ II. Not because SMAC was a "imbalanced, tedious, nightmarish atrocity," but just because it felt like a big, graphics-enhanced Civ modpack. If they had release a version of Civ with the SMAC rules, that might have kept me more occupied...

That comment is totally unfair: SMAC is a great game. Gettysburg is also an acclaimed title by Sid. Also, remember that Sid and co worked on civ2. Are you calling civ2 a pile of slop?

Metamorph:
Call me biased, but I think Sid is perhaps the best game designer of all time. He focusses on what's important: Gameplay. This often means, of course, some of the flash values are dropped, and perhaps that turns some people off. But just take a look at this (and if anybody sees a game missing, please remind me): - Silent Service (1985)
- F-15 Strike Eagle (1985)
- NATO Division Commander (1985)
- Conflict in Vietnam (1985)
- Crusade in Europe and Decision in the Desert (1985)
- Sid Meier's Pirates! (1987)
- Red Storm Rising (1987)
- F-19 Stealth Fighter (1988)
- Gunship (1989)
- Railroad Tycoon (1990)
- Sid Meier's Civilization (1991)
- Sid Meier's Covert Action (1991)
- CPU Bach (1993)
- Sid Meier's Colonization (1994)
- Sid Meier's CivNet (1995)
- Sid Meier's Civilization II (1997)
- Magic: The Gathering (1997)
- Sid Meier's Gettysburg! (then) Antietam! (1997)
Of course, on some of those titles, he was primarily an advisor (Brian Reynolds pretty much wrote SMAC and Civ2 on his own). BUT LOOK AT THAT LIST!!! If you don't find a game on there that kept you awake till morning and possible ruined several relationships, then all I can say is you should check yourself for a pulse.
In other words, I think Civ3 is going to be the best TBS game of the first half of this decade. And perhaps ever.
Take Care,
Yin

Umm, shouldn't SMAC and SMACX be in that list?

Silent Service and Red Storm Rising ...
Aahh, yes ... the good ol' days ... the sleepless nights ...
And, of course, the Civ years! :-)

I left SMAC off since from what I know, Sid had very little to do with it.
