This is the real heart of the issue. You either like the game, or you don't. It's a matter of personal opinion... different strokes for different folks.

Just because somebody doesn't agree with you doesn't make them an idiot... or stupid... or a fan boy... or a whiner...

Oh... and by the way, I wouldn't recommend ANYBODY get into a flame war in this thread. Because if you do... you are toast!

Ok But I think this is the game of 2002 without a doubt. There are some flaws. But I am impressed overall

You could be right. Isn't Master of Orion 3 coming out this year, though.

And its great how the AI players actually responds to you. Civ2 was just a stupid fest. Of Computer players doing nothing and totally ignoring you. Then programmed to turn against you at later in the game. No matter how nice you were. Civ3 is different.

Be wary. They will turn on you.

there are flaws in every game, aren't there? and you're right, it is the overall impression that each individual player has of the game that is important.
i've played quite a lot of games that seemed very well designed and implemented, but they didn't quite have the X factor that meant i would keep coming back to it. (for this read: baldur's gate. i hated that game, i'm not sure why - i'm usually an RPG nut.)

my favourite game for most of last year was Diablo 2 and, phew, boy, did that game ever have flaws in it!! nevertheless, it was a fine overall experience.
i feel similarly about civ3, i get a bit annoyed with it from time to time, but whenever i play it i have fun. as soon as it stops being fun i'll stop playing.

Also, if you are small and weak militarily. The AI likes to gang up on the weaker civs.

I do find it more interesting in the late game when the AI civs beat up on the smaller AI civs. That never seemed to happen in Civ II. At least in Civ III... if you knock a civ down in size, somebody else will probably finish off the job if you don't

This usually ticks me off. If I am one fo the stronger civs, and I have a strong military, I often sign an alliance against the first couple agressors to teach them a lesson about being bullies.

I am not gonna flame anyone, but I disagree with Ming. A game's quality can be defined beyond "whether someone likes it or not".

Civ3 has been shown beyond any reasonable doubt to be an inferior product in comparison to its predecessors. This is my opinion but I state it as fact because it plainly is.

If you fall back to "whether someone likes it or not", then you have to take the position that all games are equally good. That is not logical.

I fail to understand how the views of a very vocal minority are continuously propped up as truth.

if all games are liked an equal amount then they could be considered equally good. they are not, however.

'the sims' is an inordinately popular game - it is practically a license for maxis to print money. it is more popular than civ3 (hell, it's more popular than christmas!) but is it really a better game than civ3? i would say no, but there are many who would disagree.

do i have a point?

i thought i did ... oh yeah! ... if you like a game then, to you, it is a good game, but if a billion people like it, it probably sucks.

Yeah... inferior in some ways, but better in others.
Overall, I would have to agree with you that the game is inferior to Civ II, in my opinion. But that doesn't mean that I can't like it.
I do enjoy it. And even though I'm probably playing more Civ II MP than I am Civ III, it is only because Civ III MP isn't available yet.

It's all a matter of opinion

Looks like this thread is still alive and kicking.

I like the game too. It passes the time when I'm doing my homework.

A preventive Ming intervention, huh?

Well, I was a bit tired of the game after playing 3 months continuously, and had a few weeks break, but I'm back to business now . Yes, the game has flaws, but I like it.

I did like the game, but have not played it in a month. I'm sure that I will go back and play it, but it has lost that new car smell for me. I'm waiting on MOO3, and probably work and RPG into the mix until then. I'm actually back on XCom UFO defense right now until I finish the game I'm on.

However, Civ3 does have some problems. Corruption is my biggest complain, and since pop-whipping in the finge cities was the solution, I'm back to hating it.

Hey, I know I'm a newbie here, but where does one get all those cool smilies that I see in posts? Please do not tell me it is an AOL thing!

As any of the Friends charachters would say in their annoying, squeaky, high pitched voices... "yah it does".
