WHY Diplo Games ?
I've never figured out the attraction for Diplo games.
They're not boring to you?
I don't like Duels, but surely there's a medium; where you start wars if your land is encroached upon, for instance.

Surely you don't understand what a diplogame is. If you land is encroached upon then war is a possibility in a diplogame. No reason why not. There are always other options than war though.
This is the most common misconception about diplogames. Diplogames DOES NOT mean there is no war. There is lots of fun war in diplogames, they just make sense. Rather than being Genghis Khan vs. Hitler vs. Napoleon, diplogames may have a Napoleon but with several Mitternichs to form a coalition to stop him.

If your under the impression that Diplo games don’t have war, then you would be mistaken. It is as you say a happy medium, wars start where your land is encroached upon, and there have been wars in Diplo games started for lesser reasons, internal policies for example. In one Diplo game I was attacked because a fascist rose up next to me and thought my race (in game) was inferior. (Well it was basically a land grab attempt really.)
Diplo games don’t rule out war, just modify it to a story like atmosphere, with deals and back stabs as part of it. War is a viable option, its just in Diplo games we like there to be a reason behind it, but that never stops people from pure aggression, whether it is for Greater Mongolia or the Manifest destiny of Germany to stretch from the Atlantic to the Pacific. So no I don’t think Diplo games are boring, they just make me Paranoid .

All your questions are answered at the Diplo FAQ that has just been bumped. Read through that all, and be sure to read the HOTW2 threads, perhaps the best Diplogame ever played.

For those who don't want to bother to read all of it.just ask yourself this question....
"Wouldn't it be cool if I could play Civ2 with opponents who actually had brains instead off raisinbread-AI and actually complete a REAL game of Civ?"
Well, that's were diplogames come in...

Well its much more than that Cap.
There are lots of standard MP games on here that have very excellent players that will rip you to shreds in a couple of turns. There are big games that go on till the end, and are all with skillful players. But those still are much different than a Diplogame.
Diplogames are like the high culture of the civ world. Think of a pick up game in the Zone as a Demolition Derby. Think of a game on Apolyton with fine, upstanding fellers as professional football. Now think of Diplogames as a fine Opera or Classical Symphony.
Its not for everyone. Lord knows I prefer a good football game to opera, but for people who want a more cultured, dignified, and advanced form of Civ then Diplogames are your cup of tea.
(btw Cap, sounds like a good description for the FAQ)

That's a nice definition of Diplogames OzzyKP, I'll include it in the next version of the FAQ.
As for myself, I would compare a diplogame with a group of actors staging a play about the history of the world. The fun of it all is that none of them know the script behorehand and they have to set up the stage themselves. Improvising and getting in character as they go along. Wanna play as an evil overlord and see what happens? A Winston churchill wannabe? A shrewd and calculating Machivelli? Now's your chance!...

Grr, Drake. You wait until after HOTW3 gets started to think about returning to diplogames. Maybe you can wait around till a spot opens. Or get with Deity and try to set up a proper diplogame, (since he hasn't had much luck lately).
