What is "your" civ?
I'm not really talking about the civ you think is best. I'm talking about the civ you just love to play as. I love the aztecs. Running around with Jaguar warriors is just too fun! Even if they aren't the best civ (China is IMO) I always find myself choosing the Aztecs.

Persians, no. Aztecs, no. Iroquois, no. Hmm... what was it? Oh yeah!
ROME.
I don't care if the Immortal is 4 attack. I don't care that the MW is the ultimate Ancient killing machine. I don't care that some one else gets quick temples.
None of them speak Latin. OK, so some of them do, sorta. None of them get a leader named Maximus. None of them have a capital named Roma. None of them get Legions.
Did I say I think the Legion is the ultimate balanced unit of the Ancient era? Didn't think so.
Anyways, not what is best, what we prefer, right!
I prefer to play the mother of European civilization for reasons stated above.
Thank you

Definitely Egypt. For gameplay, Industrious and Religious are the two traits that are best suited for my style of play; Industrious because I used to love Terraforming in Alpha Centauri, Religious because I want my borders to expand and my citizens happy. For fun, I've always thought Egypt was the most impressive ancient culture (even though they were a bunch of slave-driving despots); they're just cool in my book.

I like playing the Germans. Ya gotta love those panzers... That scientific/military thang doesn't hurt either.
Cheers,

Babylon. I've come to the conclusion that Egypt is the best, but I still love playing the Babs.

Most games I played as Germans, second most Egypts, then Babylonians and Greeks. But I like to vary and try out the other civs.

I have played as France more than any other.
Trying religous civs now that I am trying the Empreror level but as an agnostic it bugs me to do so.
To make the French palatble I do change a few things.
The name is the one I use here. Ethelred.
The French become what they truly are.
Frogs and Froggy.
I also change the title to Citizen but the idiot advisors still call me mam anyway.
I desperately hate that pink color though. I can't spell the word I use for the French UU. The filters will block it. The Three Musketeers is my favorite movie but Firaxis botched it in every single possible way. PINK. BLUNDERBUSSES. DEFENSIVE.
Oh well, the Musketeers where best at annoying the Cardinals Guards anyway.

I love so much to be the Ceasar of allmighty Rome.
They might be not as good as other civs, but they are the one I enjoy the most playing with.

My Civ is the Orange one... after I change it to someone other than the English. Until then I'll take the Impi any day.

Hey, I just won a deity game (first in 60 some games) with your zulus. I only won one other game on deity, with the aztecs, but it was sort of cheap. I conquered a civ with jaguar warriors that somehow kept beating their spearmen consistently.
Two civs down, 14 to go. I AM going to win with every civ.

Good to hear FireDragon! I still haven't played a Deity game with about half the Civs. Some of them seem like they would be frustrating to use, French and Indians especially. Good luck!

I've tried the germans and english,
I like the English so far because of their powerful man of war ships, and Commercial is good, less corruption and more trade on big cities(metropolises maybe).. expanionist is pretty useless tho.
Scientific civs are good as libraries are cheap. Perhaps the Russians are good - scientific and industrious, and the cossacks sound very useful, cavalry seems to last the longest in the game apart from infantry possibly.

Admiral,
Are you serious about the English??!!
I don't have a good Xerxes quote, but I will give the Greeks credit (even though they are weak in Civ3), by reference to their confrontation with the Immortals:
"Stranger, tell the people of Lacedaemon that we who lie here obeyed their commands."
The 400. Inspiring.

A good reason for liking a civ. Those words are stirring.

This question is so hard to answer.
Anyway, since 1.17f I'll put my money on Japan, if I'm playing on emperor. (Egyptians and Aztecs work out fine too)
As techs progress rather fast, I'll be able to fight a first war with normal standard units -being militaristic maximizes my odds as I always produce vets and generate promotions-, 'building' a first expansion on my empire ...
I won't research any tech, but will make sure I get chivalry immediately after the AI civ(s) researched it. Samurai are great units, both defensively as offensively. They can make a difference on the battlefield: pillage like the JW, fight as the best in its era, upgradeable to cavalry, ... Just ain't bad, if you'd ask me ..!
This is the time for the second stage, that normally leads to my golden age. The samurai will lead a major second war.
Afterwards, I'd normally have positioned myself as a top civ.
In my latest game I'm in late industrial times and haven't researched one single tech myself. I've always bought them, in industrial era one or two turns after the the Ai civs have gotten it.
I'll focus on military and commercial (luxuries) supremacy!
AJ
P.S.: in the past I felt reluctant to play the Japanese, I guess I couldn't identify myself with them ...Right now I'm happy with them: Japan is a good civ throughout all eras, and especially in modern era. If played well, Japan can act as a game substitute for the US in real life (best industry, military and economy --> representing the world's leadership)

I almost exclusively play with the Germans. One, because I like the color blue, and two because I just like Germany. And I get to use the title Kaiserin. I'm just kind of use to them now. I used to play Germans in Civ I and Civ II also.

This is easy - Rome. What other civilization has been achieved such infamy and glory?
In 1000 years, maybe the US will supplant Rome as the definitive global power. But leading the Cohort's against those crappy Immortals is just butt kickingly awesome. And I don't remember Laurence Olivier playing a Persian at any point. Nope, it's Rome baby!

Nope, but Sir Larry did play these leaders of civilization and war:
King William III of Orange
Admiral Hood
King Lear
Duke of Wellington
Field Marshal Sir John French
The Mahdi of Khartoum
Marcus Licinius Crassus
Richard III
Hamlet, Prince of Denmark
And pictured here, Henry V
